Title: Fish.
Post by: miles on August 06, 2010, 04:59:14 am
"The rock and pool, is nice and cool, so juicy sweet. Our only wish, to catch a fish, so juicy sweet."

I bought a whole wild-caught sardine today, but I didn't know what to do with it... Can I just bite in to the side and eat everything, or what..?

I've not eaten any raw fish before, never mind a whole one. Is it ok to eat everything of the fish? To just bite in to it? Will it taste nice? I need to see someone else biting into a whole fish =/

I feel bad that I've bought it and now it is sitting in the fridge, hopefully some people can reply fast so I can get to it whilst it's still fresh..

You eat all bones, the gut, organs, skin etc? Have you tried eating the head? I can just bite in to it, as it is and it will taste ok?

I've tried eating the head but it was too gross, to be honest. I even eat the transparent fish-scales, though, which is why I prefer raw shellfish which are not scaly.

I admit I usually prefer eating just the muscle-meats of the bigger fish as I don't much like the taste of raw fish liver, let alone the bones. It's only with the smallest fish like sprats or sardines where I eat 90% or 100% of the fish.

I ate the muscle/skin. I examined the rest, opened up the head, put an eyeball in my mouth but didn't eat it..

Hey GS, can you buy a sardine and make a video of you eating it whole? I mean, if you would eat it whole anyway. Or Tyler, but I just know GS has made videos before. Or anyone else of course... I couldn't tell what bits were what really, and I wasn't sure if I should just eat everything.

It's amazing how weakly the fish is bound together...

I am not tech-savvy so have no idea how to post videos online and anyway I don't have a video-camera, just a faulty difital camera.

Even if I had the tech, I wouldn't dream of posting a video of me eating a raw wild hare carcass or whatever. Except in restaurants, my eating habits are those of a caveman so do not look terribly aesthetic on sight.

I've eaten all organs of a medium sized fish, but its gall bladder.  I've eaten as much of the head as I could, but teeth are too sharp.

Do you eat softshell crab shells and harder shells?  I used to eat scales too along with the skin, but I haven't eaten fish lately, and haven't been interested in it in what seems like many months.

It's great GS makes videos of eating raw.  I'm incredibly shy to be on camera.  I wouldn't always look bad/savage, oftentimes too graceful, whatever. Whatever I would look like, I never did it, and I'm also no techie at all either.

I think Miles just wanted from Goodsamaritan.  My habits don't exactly make me like a cavewoman, but no makeup etc might make me look like one too.

I've eaten raw crabs before. They are dirt-cheap(costing c.3 pounds sterling per crab). They are generally hard-shelled, and not easy to get at all the flesh. I have given up in recent times as I need to sue a hammer, and neighbours would hate my guts if I used a hammer too often.

How do you know which organ is which, and why not the gall bladder?

Thanks.  I haven't been eating crab either.  Crabs just seem difficult to get at being raw for me too.  I maybe should do it in the backyard.  Maybe my cat would want a share.  Have you killed them with the hammer?

The green grotesquely bitter thing must be the gall bladder.  I couldn't eat it.

You mean these fresh sardines?

I blogged about this before at http://www.myhealthblog.org/2009/05/22/fresh-sea-food-at-the-fishing-town-of-catbalogan/

I found and ate fresh raw sardines in the fishing town of Catbalogan.
Yes, I ate the whole fish - head, innards, tail.
I think those sardines in the picture are 4 inches long .
Same thing with the fish galunggong. (the small 2 to 3 inch ones in vinegar)
Same thing with the fish dilis. (always whole, I dislike eating it without the head and innards)
Same thing with the tiny fish dulong. (always whole, it's not possible not to eat it whole, i like this plain)

My idea of fresh is freshly caught and not yet put in the refrigerator or freezer and immediately eat it.

You can put it in vinegar first if you like as ceviche.  It depends on the fish if it tastes good that way.

If the innards or the head tastes bad for you then don't eat them.

---------

sardines aren't fresh enough in manila if they ever get here sometimes.
but I can make a video of me eating those other raw fish during the working week in the wet market.

OK thanks GS. The sardine I had was quite a bit longer than 4" but not sure by how much. It was on the fish-counter at the supermarket, so it was sitting on ice. It's not a problem to eat the digestive tract?

Never had any problems eating their intestines.
If the intestines are bitter, I don't eat it.

I once blenderised whole sardines at forced them down. Went into anaphylaxis and threw up.

To me, fish and shellfish (mackerel, scallops, salmon, oysters....) are the best food on earth! There is nothing that tastes better to me. But I like fish only if it  is stored gutted unless the fish is very fresh when sold.

Fish and other seafood are great and definitely easier to get used to raw. Yesterday I had a few raw shrimps. They tasted nice and gooey. I also took a very small sip from each shrimp head but the stuff gave me an irritated throat. Today I ate lean tuna- neutral taste and not very filling as well as gutted sardines, which were more flavorful and more filling. I don't yet have the courage to try raw fish guts/heads yet.

For some reason this post just made me LOL.

Good post!

I've only eaten raw fish in sashimi form & never the whole as well. Whole mackerel is on sale by me. I wasn't sure if I should attempt it. Since it's on sale I can always just chuck it if I'm not feeling it lol.
