Title: Suddenly really gone off raw kidney
Post by: technosmith on November 28, 2010, 08:39:11 pm
Hey,

Despite being relatively new to raw paleo, I initially had no issues eating raw organs. I ate liver, kidney, heart and tongue.

I have suddenly gone massively off kidney. I don't know if I read it somewhere or if I have told myself this, but I can't get it out of my head that they smell like piss!! Apologies for the graphic description!

Is their strong smell that of piss? They do filter urine I believe.

Or have I just told myself this?

Also, could going off the taste be my bodies way of letting me know that I don't need this in my diet?

Are raw kidneys very nutritious?

I'm really into raw heart at the moment. Very tasty!

Cheers,

Phil

Kidneys filter blood and make urine.

To reduce the smell, you can try soaking the kidneys overnight, either in salt water or in milk.

Kidneys are very nutritious:

That data is for conventional feedlot beef. Grass-fed or wild will be even more nutritious.

But if you start getting too much of some of these nutrients (especially VitA), you might lose the taste for kidneys. That happened to me. When I started eating raw meat, I ate lots of organs on a regular basis, including kidney and liver. But now after ~3 years, I don't eat liver/kidney more than once a month.

Heart and tongue don't have such a high concentration of nutrients, so they can be eaten much more often.

Personally, I like the taste of raw kidneys, even aged, raw kidneys. I suppose this aversion might be due to reading some rubbish online re kidneys, but if it's instinctive, by all means avoid it for now. I found, for example, that eating raw livers too much led to too many visits to the bathroom(I suspect because I was getting too many nutrients I didn't need from it), so I only have it occasionally now.

Follow your instincto instincts.
If it smells bad for you, if you don't feel like eating kidney right now, then don't eat kidneys.

beef kidneys have the mildest scent.  lamb and bison kidneys smell much stronger.  not sure about pork.

Kidneys were very strong to me as well, I could hardly stand it. Next time I'll try soaking first. Interestingly I got used to liver pretty quickly, but tongue (which a lot of people say they like) grossed me out and I haven't tried it since.
