Title: Poop time = Painful
Post by: chop-chop on January 16, 2011, 07:41:17 am
Hi I have been on a Paleo Diet for about 2 weeks and I was wondering about the quality of my poop and my pooptime  ;D

Before I started this new way of eating I was eating a Mexican oriented diet. Lots of corn, beans and rice with everything.
I have since cut  all grains and dairy (I am not lactose intolerant).

Problem is I get abdominal cramps right when I go the the bathroom. I get minor urges. I also get this feeling that I am not fully empty (I think it's called straining). I am not constipated nor have diareea but I would say my feces are closer to the diarrheal side. They are between type 4 and Type 6 in the Bristol Stool Scale.

Most of the research I've done online points to IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) but I am confused since for me it went the other way (I started experiencing IBS after starting a paleo like diet) while most people go Paleo to fix it.  ??? I don't recall  this condition with my previous diet unless I ate lots of really spicy salsa or foods.

So anyways what can I do to improve my pooptime? Off course while staying as close to the Paleo philosophy of eating

Go rawpalaeo instead of cooked-palaeo.That will work far better.

Eat raw fruit and raw fat.
That will make you move smoothly.

Raw fat is the best thing ever for healing the gut. Also you may not be fully adapted to the paleo diet yet after eating the previous diet which you described (seems like a lot of starches pre-paleo). Cooked meats caused me problems as well; it wasn't until I went to a raw diet did I start to heal.

Lots of raw vegetables help to keep me regular. I like eating lots of spinach and green spring mixes. Others like carrots are good too. That can help with bulking up and slowing down the flow when you relieve yourself, and it can also help with constipation which you said you didn't have.

If you decide to eat more raw vegetables, you should be aware that you need to drink plenty of water, or else all that vegetable matter will get stuck in your intestines. Water keeps it moving.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I already eat plenty of vegetables and fruits raw. My sources for raw fat are different kinds of nuts and avocado. What are other sources?

I guess I will stick with it for a few weeks and see if my body adapts.

raw vegetables have the opposite effect on me, no matter how much water I drink-they constipate me. The only thing that has helped me with digestion problems (consipation & never be really "empty") was ZC with lots of fat.

You said your sources of raw fats are nuts and avocados? Well nuts aren't going to help many of our digestions, I'll tell you that. I think your problem might be a lack of raw animal fat. That should help move things along easliy.

Depending on NUTS as a staple food is BAD.
Nuts are bad for digestion of animal food.
Nuts should be relegated to a handful only in a whole month.
Drop the nuts and you will feel better.

The standard mainstream cooked paleo diet is full of misconceptions and bad recommendations. There is no plant fat that can possibly take the place of raw animal fat, I am fond of marrow and lamb fat myself.

Large amounts of nuts and vegtables are not digestible compatible with eatting large amounts of animal fats and protein.

...ZC with lots of fat.

what is ZC with lots of fat?

Can you elaborate more and provide some references? I am just learning and can do the reading if you point me in the right direction.

Drop the nuts and you will feel better.

I will drop the nuts to see how it goes

Zero carb with lots of animal fat. (I mean 100% animal diet, raw-no plant foods whatsoever eaten)

I also find that less vegetables and fruit leads to more perfect and regular bowel movements.  I think fiber is only necessary to the extent that plant material is being consumed.  Thus if I eat a fruit or some greens it passes through me without any problems or pain because they are whole and have all the fiber that is necessary.  But when I go more ZC or VLC fiber is less necessary as there is less vegetable matter or fruit.

Hi I have been on a Paleo Diet for about 2 weeks and I was wondering about the quality of my poop and my pooptime  ;D

Its completely normal to experience a change in this department when you switch to another diet from the one you are used to. Make sure you have a good fat to protein ratio. I think most people find their comfort zone somewhere between 75-90% fat the rest protein measured by energy and carbs as you would encounter them in the wild (berries, the odd fruit etc) You can have too much of a good thing.

also what GS said about nuts. They are a nice occational treat but they will fuck your digestive system right up. I litterally 'shit bricks' if I have more than a handfull.
