Apparently, one can reduce the amounts of AGEs by only cooking at high altitudes, and there are various drugs which might work too(though undoubtedly giving side-effects).

Is there any research to show that dietary AGEs have a harmful effect?

There are now such vast numbers of studies on the harmful effects of AGEs/advanced glycation end products. Here is a page which features just some examples of them in the references:-

I'm referring to dietary AGEs, as in AGEs that are already in the food that you put into your body, not the ones that are formed within the body.

Is there any research to show that they are unhealthy, as if they are somehow not metabolized and incorporated into living cells?

That other page was referring to AGEs in general, INCLUDING dietary AGEs, not just the minor amounts of AGEs naturally formed within the body.

There are, of course, 1000s of studies specifically focusing on the great harm caused by dietary AGEs. Here's a small sample thereof, but more are found on pubmed:-

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17452738

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20229096

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18448830

And then there's the study showing that restricting intake off dietary AGEs led to a decrease in the amounts of AGEs within the body:-

and so on and so forth.....
