Title: cucumber and tomato are fruit?
Post by: Joy2012 on May 12, 2013, 01:32:56 pm
Is it true that both cucumbers and tomatoes are fruit and thus they contain no anti-nutrients as other vegetables do?

Botanically yes, there are classified as fruits. But as a food, they are considered vegetables and are usually well digested with other veggies.
Everything eaten in excess becomes an anti-nutrient, or sort of!

cucumber is in the cucurbit family, its basically a melon, but also same family as pumpkins/winter squash, zucchini/summer squash. tomatoes are solanaceae/nightshade, same family as potatoes, peppers, egg plants, tomatillo, ground cherry and many more. solanaecae family can cause inflammation in some due to the chemical solanine, which is toxic at high doses, hence "deadly nightshades"
