Primal Diet / Re: Phoenix, AZ RAW milk places?? On Vacation...
« on: December 10, 2011, 04:11:45 am »
As far as I know, all the big raw milk producers (at least here in CA) feed grains for their milk cows.

I ended up finding a place in AZ that looked trustworthy enough, went to the farm and they were all munching on dry hay, probably the best your going to get out there. And I'm sure some grains are used. Its was not organic so GMO feed is a concern, I didn't look that much into it at the time. The farm's site was http://saveyourdairy.com/ , if that's helpful for anyone else.

Dorothy-  Thanks! :) Was really happy to reach this goal of mine.

I have been practicing with RAF's since joining this site and haven't stopped since. It has fixed my digestion and keeps me lean year around, so if it works I'm stickin' with it. I wouldn't consider myself 100% RP, since I do drink some raw dairy, and occasionally juice. After being 100% strict raw for awhile, I let myself eat small amounts of certain cooked food on occasion and try not to turn my diet into "religion" like it was in the past, if for nothing else than social reasons.

Jess- Among other things, and other lifts, deadlift 600+, get some more records, and eventually make a living helping people reach fitness, strength, and health goals.

I owe a lot to lifting, it has helped me get my head on straight to correct my health and given me the confidence to push toward big long term goals, whatever it may be. I would like to believe your comment was not facetious, so I answer as such.

KD- Thanks man, glad to see you still around!  Amazing what a little competition will do! How's everything goin'??

To the people who don't see the benefits of simple barbell and plates exercise in strength training... do what works for you, and gets you excited to keep pushing forward. Whatever that may be. Success in what your striving for is whats important, not the tools you used to get there. Staying positive and always improving is likely the largest life lesson I have learned from this. For me this all goes FAR beyond simply lifting weights, and gaining muscle.

It might be more impressive that a fruitarian can deadlift his bodyweight than a raw paleo deadlifting 3x.

Hahaha

GS- Absolutely I can point you in the right direction. If you have any questions feel free to PM me or ask.

I don't normally wear a belt at all. You can see me deadlift an easy 525 on my channel with nothing but shorts and a t-shirt. In competition you don't get extra points for being paleo, so I wear the belt to get the few extra pounds that it can give you, just for that one day. Can you pull 525 without a belt with your "maximal potential training"? lol Now who's stupid.

I don't have the link to his video, I think its somewhat recent so it should be toward the top of his recent uploads.

I was inspired to post up this video here after watching durainrider's frutarian deadlift video on youtube. So I wanted to put something out there for the carnivorous. Video also shows the end of my last warm-ups. Done in competition, American record.  O0

Deadlifts 405, 455, 496, 557 @ 157 RAW

I would also be interested in trying this fermented honey if at some point it will be offered.

Sorry I did not see this in time. I'm not real familiar with LA area, or in what part you were at, but the brand Organic Pastures is sold at farmers markets, and health stores. Whole Foods does not carry raw milk products anymore.

Primal Diet / Thin/Runny Honey Batch (Honey Pacifica)
« on: September 11, 2011, 12:25:41 pm »
I have been buying cold packed honey from honey pacifica for a little while now and just recently have been getting it shipped in larger bottles to my house. Usually this wildflower honey is very thick, I would be unable to pour it out.

This batch that I just received recently is very runny and readily pours out of the jar. I'm not sure if that is just the way the batch is this summer, or if maybe it got too hot in the UPS truck when being shipped. Its also much darker than usual. I don't know much about this sort of thing so I thought I would ask.

What do you guys think? Any experience with this brand recently, is this normal?

how do you "control" the high level impact forces upon your tendons etc?
IMO you either train controlled or you train explosive. If competitive lifting is your thing than you have to train explosive to teach your body the skill required to perform those movements. However you should also train controlled to muscular failure to stimulate strength increases the safest way possible. Stregth increases that help to prevent injury when performing those explosive lifts.

Doing explosive movements will not generate some sort of different tissue strength to prevent injury. If your not lifting competitive there is no reward in doing any type of explosive exercise but there sure as hell is a risk in doing them.

I think we may be talking about two different. In my mind, uncontrolled lifting would just mean sloppy. Uneven bar movement, loss of control over where the bar is placed in the power curve often called "going out of the groove". When I refer to explosive barbell movements, I think mostly of explosive eccentric. Although olympic lifters often have a fast but controlled concentric too, but not as common. Usually when in the gym its recommended to have a fast as possible eccentric to your movements, and with practice you can do this with complete control. The idea along with low rep training trains the stronger fast twitch muscle fibers.

Just to add real quick, that is an interesting theory you bring up about no reward and only risk, I guess it depends on the lifter though. If you can truly go into a gym with absolutely no competitive attitude and very little drive to achieve results, maybe slow and controlled movements can get you somewhere. In the real world, you are training with your buddy, and you wanna beat his lifts. You don't want to be lifting the same ol' weights year in and year out, because you will get no progress. I see it happen all the time in the gym, same guys lifting the same weights with the same bodies for years and years. :(

Perhaps you may be correct though, I'm sure someone out there has gotten big and strong doing like, 8 second eccentrics, but going to be rare, and it probably took a whole lot longer.

I'm no where near as strong as you yet I will hit 2.5 I think as I've only been doing them consistently since mid January and I get the feelings you mentioned..pretty cool that's why I want heavier, I'm addicted.  If you could point me to any good sites that would be cool.

How long have you been doing them?

You will get there man, just keep pushing and keep consistent and you will hit your goals. Me and KD are registered over at ironaddicts forums, its a pretty good site. I have been over there for years now, lots of good guys over there. I have been lifting since '08. Made a lot of bad choices, including hiring a 24hr fitness personal trainer and doing "bodybuilding" diets, etc. But if it wasn't for all of that, I probably wouldn't be here today looking on a total new page in health and wellness.

Best of luck to your goals man, let me know if you come over to the other forum, be cool to have another RP guy over there.

that's the point - if you train in the gym you will get hurt outside of it - because slow controlled movements will not prepare you for a real life test.

I train controlled but explosively. Although rare, I have also gotten injuries from lifting too. No risk=no reward to some degree, and this all depends on your goals. I wouldn't train an every day Joe who wants to just improve his quality of life through exercise the same way as a competitive lifter.

I never get injured outside the gym though, if that counts for anything.

How do you feel when moving or how you bodyworks compared to when you didn't deadlift with all the new extra muscle/strength in you hipflexors/back?

How did you get to such a huge weight? genetically gifted?

Well, everything feels a lot lighter. I was using a pickaxe the other day and was surprised that I could swing it pretty much as fast as any stick haha. Other than that, my jumping is a lot better, and I never really did any sprinting before but I feel like every time my lifts go up I get faster. Grip strength is much improved too.

I just lift like any powerlifter would, trying to hit bigger weights often as I can. Theres guys out there hitting over 4xBW deadlifts.

This weeks (tomorrow)

Deadlift only.

New PB everyweek (last week 291.5 pounds) me at 154 pounds I think. Aiming for 2.5 bodyweight is this a reasonable goal?

Ps I don't add the bar weight, is this the deal?

Add the bar weight.

I'm deadlifting over 3x bodyweight without a belt @ 155lbs, so its anything but impossible. I want 3.5xbw

The guy I mentioned, Tom, doesn't seem to have a problem. In fact he originally started deadlifting to improve his sprinting. Hamstring issues are very common among sprinters, I wouldn't say deadlifting+sprints=hamstring injury though, thats a long shot. Have you seen Magnusson's 1015lb world record raw deadlift? If you look at one of his recent interviews you may be shocked at what he does to work his speed, sprints!

In your example of the V8 S2000 I think things are a little different with the human body, unless I misunderstood. Although there are plenty of V8 swapped miatas that hold their own on the track as well as aluminum block v8's swapped into rx7's with good success and surprisingly little weight balance disturbance(like 15lbs). There is a point where the extra power benefits over the extra weight, and with the human body you can train in such a way to increase strength and power without adding much unnecessary weight. Such as adding a supercharger or turbo to the S2000--wouldn't upset the weight balance much, and you would surely be getting faster lap times with the extra power in the straights. Even say, comparing the GTR which is a huge beast of a car weighing what, almost 4000lbs, compared to an S2000, weighing 2800lbs, the GTR will still be able to get an advantage due to the extra power (and grip, etc of course) even if it does weigh more.

In comparison a pro bodybuilder might as well be a dump truck with all the extra weight, and muscles trained in a way to be less efficient (at the things we are talking about). I'm talking about staying light, while gaining explosive strength. Can't be anything negative about that? O0

This "functional strength" thing has been a joke around most weightlifting circles. In the real world, if you have a heavy ass deadlift/squat/bench/row your "functional strength" is going to be pretty damn high. People that argue this are not very strong in the first place, obviously they also don't have any real "functional strength".

Don't know where all these people got the idea from that strong=heavy/slow/non-athletic. Probably just spread by all the weak people to grow their e-penor. Sure I can see if you have overly bulky muscle mass or something like a bodybuilder. That guy who just deadlifted 772 at 170lbs bodyweight to break Ed Coan's record is an amazing sprinter--look him up. I'm pretty damn sure he could lift a heavier rock than you functional boys wouldn't you think? How about beat him in a sprint?

I really wish we could smash this stupid functional strength thing right now... just silly and makes the board look bad to strong people. I don't post here much anymore because all the "know it all about everything" people made it difficult to find the good stuff! O0

General Discussion / Fresh Spring Water Questions...
« on: February 28, 2011, 02:59:23 am »
So, there are no springs plotted near my location on findaspring.com, which does not surprise me. People are not all that health conscious around here. So what I have been doing is looking at topographical maps that have spring locations marked, but I have a some questions.

From Wikipedia "Non-artesian springs may simply flow from a higher elevation through the earth to a lower elevation and exit in the form of a spring, using the ground like a drainage pipe."

Is this type of spring undesirable? How do I know I am not just getting snow water melting from the top of the mountain? Is what I am looking for an artesian well only?

Nice, I am 1/2 way through this radio show currently and have a few thoughts. I have listened to this radio show awhile back when I was first interested in the primal diet, but forgot a lot so I am listening to it over again. I am curious how big this guy really is or how tall he is, anyone have any recent pictures of him while he was on the primal diet? Initially 215 on a bulk where he "can still see his abs" tells me he is at 10-12% (being generously low). Depending on how tall he is, this really may not be much.

I could care less about size and all that, just trying to point out my thoughts. He is saying right now that raw food is better than steroids, but I think that is a little much--in terms of health sure, strength...I doubt it but maybe, but bodybuilding?? I would like to think I have found the end all be all diet to being great at everything (including bodybuilding), but I just don't know... If our poster boy is 215lbs bulked up, I just hope he is 5'5 I guess is all I'm sayin', otherwise I am still skeptical.

edit: actually, doing a little more research, perhaps his weight isn't all THAT low for the normal natural bodybuilder so I apologize. BUT, comparing it to steroids is still just a little exaggeration, since it doesn't sound like he is a big name natural pro like Layne Norton. Guys on juice are 200+ in contest shape I believe. Disclaimer: i don't know much about bodybuilding so feel free to keep me honest. :D

24
How tall are you? I don't doubt its possible to gain some size on RPD, I just don't know if its possible to, say, place in an all natural bodybuilding show, or something like that. Although I am probably wrong and there is probably someone out there that has done it! I am short, like 5'6-5'7 so 155lbs is where my body likes to stay at on my current diet of 2lbs of beef a day  (all different cuts, sometimes organs), 4-6 cups of milk, and 3 servings of fruit, plus sometimes lots of honey, sometimes I overdo it a bit on the honey :D. I do think it may be possible to gain more weight with the current diet if I continue adding weight on the bar, or shovel in more food though.

I have been on RPD for under a year, and part of that time has been little progress in the gym from injuries and regaining what I lost from being sick and what-not. So, I definitely can't say I know it all and how thing work on this diet, just my experience so far, which isn't much! Glad I can be a part of this topic, I just really hope we can stick the guys together that are interested in this kind of stuff to figure out what works and what doesn't a little quicker.

For myself, I would like to gain another 10lbs to be sitting at 165lbs to be at the top of my weight class in powerlifting.

As far as detox goes, I am kinda bummed to admit that I am not that great at reading the signs from my body and I pretty much feel the same as I did. Although going back from my diet of burgers and hot dogs a few weeks ago as an experiment, I feel MUCH better ditching that stuff.

For training I am usually 5-1 reps on the main lifts (squat, bench, deadlift, and all their variations), but recently I have been finding better progress in the 5-3 rep range. I have always felt recovery has been great, but I would assume its even better on RPD, unless your routine is totally over the top crazy I don't think you have to worry much. I get nice strength gains from just one or two sets of low reps, as long as I put enough intensity into a set sometimes that is all you need to progress. That billstarr setup I mentioned to you is 3 exercises per day, and 1 heavy set for each, the rest is warm ups. I gained awesome on that routine and never felt even the slightest signs of overtraining, but I can't say it will be the same for everyone. I recently have been doing low volume front squats pretty much every day with no noticeable overtraining.

About your low carb question it depends on who you ask, you can see my diet and I think I am pretty high carb, especially if I eat honey that day which is like 10 tbsps or the end of the bottle whichever comes first lol. But if you ask a guy on a typical bodybuilder diet they think I am running a keto diet or something haha. A lot of the big natty guys are on LOTS of carbs, and run carb cycling, "cheat days" paired up with an almost paleo type week. On the weekend they will gorge on like 15k calories of doughnuts and poptarts, then run low carb for the rest of the week.

Hopefully all that babble can be beneficial in some way, it got a little long without me noticing. I wish you the best of luck man, and I would REALLY like to follow along a full log of diet workout with weights used, maybe even some youtube lifting vids, of another RP dieter.

Oh, and I just wanted to say, in the beginning I was more of a size guy (back when I got up to 190's) but after a year or so I realized hitting weight PR's every week or few weeks was more fun for me than waiting 3 months to see if my shoulders got a little bigger in a side by side picture comparison haha. I am not sure how experienced you are so this may all be unimportant and you already know this, but you just gotta find what style you enjoy because its not easy, and its a long road, and if you don't enjoy it it'll be impossible to be consistent.

Keep us updated! :)

Never registered with any bodybuilding site.  To be honest there is too much information for me to search through, and since eating raw, I am only interested in what works for raw paleos.  I'm also after size, not strength or definition(yet).

Do you have a direct link to your log that I could take a look at?  Hell I might even take up your offer...

The only difference you are going to notice from raw paleo to SAD/bodybuilder diet is being leaner year around, POSSIBLY stronger, and a LOT longer to gain weight. At least that is my experience.

I have a link to my log, but you have to be registered to the site to access the log section. When you register you will see my name in there, my log is pretty active and usually bumped to the top.

I may have some insight to offer here. I also recently did an experiment with a bulking diet.

In the beginning I went from a little chubby 145 to a chubby (14-15% bf) 198 on a bodybuilding diet (pre RP). Routine I followed was a 3 day a week, push/pull/legs type setup. I stayed at this weight for awhile, I think I eventually cleaned up my diet slightly and went down to 185's, while keeping a 370 squat, 320 bench, and 455 deadlift. Eventually I decided I wanted to try RP, went cold turkey and my weight went alll the way down to 155 at 10%ish and has STAYED here. It only took me a couple weeks to lose the weight, and being sick on and off (I figured from the diet, I don't know for sure) didn't help.

I was super discouraged and my lifts were pretty weak starting back up, but I was significantly lighter. I decided at that point to go on the billstarr 5x5 routine (you can look it up, its a strength based routine). Within a few weeks my lifts were up to an estimated (used calculated max off of five rep max) 485 deadlift and 305ish bench, at the same 155lbs. Squat has been out of the question due to an injury.

Recently I went on a burger/hot dog/potato binge (for different reasons.. mentioned in my log lol) and I gained a bunch of weight super fast, ended up being mostly fat and I was feeling like crap, workouts were not as strong I felt, and when I went back to RPD I dropped the weight quickly and here I am back at 155, making progress on my workouts.

If you asked me, I would say I am not sure if its possible to get big off of RPD (compared to a diet with starches and grains), but I do think its possible to be strong and lean.

I wish you luck on your journey to get size, and I think you will gain a significant amount of size depending on your starting point, but it will take awhile to look like you lift in a t-shirt on RPD lol. If you ask me, I think the only way you are going to force size is to force strength, because I doubt you will get much out of a pump workout bodybuilding routine without all the starches and grains. Its worth a shot though, I defiantly would like to watch your progress on some sort of log.
