Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Re: Veggies over fruits?
« on: April 18, 2011, 06:15:12 pm »
Here are the fruits I eat from time to time.  I eat only small quantities of most fruit except for young green whole coconut which I end up drinking a lot of during the day.  The meat of the young coconut is very soft like jelly and very easy to digest.

General Discussion / Re: pictures of grass fed meat and fat?

Just found the first company really marketing organic grass fed beef in the Philippines at http://www.downtoearth.ph/

I understand the real grass fed beef that they offer is quite a bit thinner than some of the other really fat beef you find in the market.  I guess that is a sign that the cattle is really grass fed and not fed a mixture of grass and grains and other things to fatten them up.  I even heard some stories of force-feeding the cows molasses to make sure they get fattened in some farms in the countryside.  I assume that changes the composition and quality of the meat quite a bit.

I have no problems eating fresh young green coconut and consume 4-5 a day since they are cheap and plentiful in the Philippines.  I find they really help improve my skin as well.  Coconut water and young soft coconut meat are great saturated fat to consume! http://bit.ly/g7VO7Y

Yes, I agree that it has increased quite a bit.  I definitely have more stamina than before and feel a lot less tired.  No need for coffee or tea on this diet!

Hot Topics / Re: One thing non-paleo you occasionally indulge on?

After over three months on a strict raw paleo diet, I have eaten grilled chicken on 3 occasions and also ate steam and grilled shrimp a couple of times over the past two months.  I also had a beer one night and had a glass of wine with dinner tonight.  I still eat mostly raw paleo every day but do see the need for the occasional cooked (paleo) meal now and then as I travel since it is hard to always carry food around and eat raw meat with business colleagues.  I try and meet my business contacts in Japanese restaurants but this does not always work out.

Off Topic / Re: Who's into fishing?
« on: March 13, 2011, 11:32:26 pm »
Good samaritan, I am jealous.  Let me know next time you go out fishing, I love to fish!  I use to go out often when I lived in the Caribbean and some in Latin America but I have not had the chance to go out in the Philippines except for lapu-lapu (grouper).  I also tired eating dorado raw but did not like the taste at all.  I agree that it tastes much better lightly grilled or in soup.  Do you have the contacts for the fisherman you went out with?  When do you plan to go again?  The best fishing is for large yellow fin tuna or marlin.  You need to try that some time for some real fighting fish, especially when they can weigh 50 kilos or more!

I agree that a lot depends on how you define vegetables and fruits.  I prefer juicing vegetables like celery, spinach, camote (sweet potato) tops, parsley, cilantro, and carrots.  Put I also like to include fruit like zucchini and cucumber in my juices.  I don't eat a lot of vegetables but mostly juice them. The fruits I eat are lots of tomato, cucumber, avocados, and plenty of coconuts (juice and meat).  I also occasionally eat whole fruit like watermelon, banana, oranges, apples, and berries.  There are good vitamins and nutrients that are better sourced from some amount of vegetable juices and fruit but you still need mostly fat and animal protein.

General Discussion / Re: Albacore Tuna
« on: March 13, 2011, 11:04:46 pm »
Have you tried yellow fin tuna?  You can usually get that raw in whole foods.  I eat quite a bit of raw yellow fin tuna since it is very plentiful here in the Philippines, at least a kilo every week.  My sister has warned me though about mercury from eating excessive tuna (more than a half kilo a week).  What are others thoughts on mercury from tuna, swordfish, marlin and other large ocean fish?

Health / Numbness in arms and hands on a raw paleo diet
« on: January 17, 2011, 07:14:09 am »
I have noticed that I am waking up more often with numbness in my hands and more regular muscle cramps in my feet and lower legs at night.  Anyone else suffer from these symptoms on a raw paleo diet?  My food intake is mostly raw red meat, raw tuna, vegetables (mostly in juice), 5-6 young coconuts a day, some fruit, and 3-4 raw eggs a day.

Tuna sashimi marinated with lemon extra virgin olive oil, tomato, onion, cilantro, and garlic. Got tired of eating plain raw fish  ;)

I will be traveling to attend a meeting near Pembroke Pines and then another meeting in Ft Meyers in late January and wanted advice on organic stores in these cities.  Anyone from these cities?

Primal Diet / Re: Raw Unheated Honey

That's a Vermont, USA honey. Do you get that in the Philippines or are you in the USA?

I found what the substance is that has insulin-like activity. It's royal jelly. One of the studies didn't have a positive result, but all the most recent ones did, including a clinical trial in humans.

I am in the Philippines and found it here in a health food store.

I have been fighting a bit of a cold/flu for the past two weeks with a cough that would not go away. It is getting better now and I have also used honey and raw honey.  The brand I was able to get was "Honey Gardens - Apitherapy Raw Honey." It is the closest I was able to find to a raw honeycomb. Seems to help.

Personals / Re: Has Raw Paleo Ever Interfered in your relationships?
« on: January 02, 2011, 05:38:07 pm »
My wife puts up with my new raw paleo diet but she is not willing yet to try it. She has been patient to go to the farmers market when I was not well to source grass-fed beef and we have a great choice of japanese restaurants nearby where we can get sashimi as well. She also goes out to get organic eggs. My mother actually brought me her copy of AV's "We Want to Live."  She has met AV and occasionally eats raw paelo but she loves to cook too much to give up cooked food  l)

While traveling recently to the US, I arranged most dinners out with friends at Japanese restaurants.  A bit expensive, but no problem eating raw fish.  I do not eat raw beef in public but when I am invited out somewhere where I cannot get raw meat or fish, I eat either several raw eggs or raw meat before hand and then join others later with a salad and fruit plate.

Once, I did have to eat some cooked food since friends had ordered for my daughter and I in advance and I did not want to offend our hosts so did eat a bit.  Other than that time and twice traveling for more than 24 hours on a transpacific flights, I have done pretty well eating raw paleo and have support from my family (my sister eats mostly raw paleo and has also met AV several times), friends, and work colleagues.  Again the difference is ultimately the results - how I look and how I was able to heal my eye which is why I started in the beginning.  Just be patient with others, I am sure it took many of us a bit of time to adjust to this new diet.  It is not so easy with so much emphasis on cooked food and concerns that the medical profession always raise with raw meat and seafood.

It used to be a commonly known fact in medicine that we need at least a total cholesterol level of 180 to make hormones. This is a fact and can be found in medical journals and texts. I actually had to raise my cholesterol just to make sufficient testosterone. I am at 199 right now, but would like to get it much higher.

Never!!! let it get under 180...

Seeing that your glucose dropped to good ranges means that something you're doing is right. The glucose is a way more serious issue that lipids. You previously being at 100 fasting is actually known to be pre diabetic.

Pioneer, I will check on my hormone levels but based on the quote above with my total cholesterol at 138, I am quite a bit lower than the minimum level of 180. My fasting blood sugar is also now at 101 but it jumps from 86 to 102 during the last three tests I took.

Health / Re: What do you take for a bad cough and flu symptoms?
« on: January 01, 2011, 11:03:13 pm »
No I only ate one cooked meal because we were guests somewhere but I already had the flu.  I was off the steroids so I think I got it the old fashion way from others around me who were sick with the flu.  I guess a raw paleo diet does not make you completely immune to the flu or colds ;-) I have tried the Ginger and raw honey along with lemon. Still have a cough and some congestion after 10 days but getting better.

I have now been on a raw food diet for about 10 weeks. My cholesterol levels have steadily declined with VLDL going from 47 to now around 33, LDL dropped from 160 to around 75, but what worried me is that my HDL which was up to 51 is now at 29 so my overall cholesterol level is now at 138 which is actually too low. I have been eating plenty of fat, coconut meat, raw eggs, raw fish and some beef fat.  Over the past week, due to holidays, I did cut back a bit on eggs from having 2-3 to having 1-2 a day and cut back on fresh young coconuts from 6-8 a day to 3-4 a day since it was hard to get more during the past week in the Philippines. I assume cutting back on raw eggs and coconut must have contributed to my drop in HDL cholesterol.  I hope to get more organic duck eggs tomorrow since I am out now due to the holiday season here.  I am increasing my intact of olive oil and actually taking some fish oil supplements in the meantime.  The only other supplements I added over the past month were ginger, turmeric, and boswellia to help reduce swelling in my eye and get me completely off the steroids I was taking before. Any other advice out there about increasing HDL cholesterol?

I am trying raw eggs with orange juice and alternating with juiced ginger, raw lemon juice, and a bit of raw honey.  Any one else try something else?

A lot of vitamin D is of paramount importance.
How does your diet currently look like? What do you eat?

I alternate by eating raw (wild salmon or tuna) with raw or at least very rare beef, I also eat 2 raw fertilized duck eggs, 5-6 young coconuts a day, one portion of fruit and consume plenty of fresh vegetable juices a day.

One thing I noted about Raw Food diets is the limited amount of calcium.  If it is not easy to get raw milk, what do you do?  I find in the past when I did not have enough calcium, I get leg or foot cramps and once I take calcium supplements for a few days this goes away.  I noticed the same thing again lately when on a raw food diet.  I can take supplements but what do others do for calcium?
