Have you been tested to celiac disease?
Celiac is an autoimune reaction to gluten in which your own defenses destroy the lining of the upper intestine, causing among other issues mineral and vitamin malabsorption. It is very difficult to diagnose unless a biopsy is performed, but some of your symptoms seem to fit.

It is dificult to diagnose without a specific test, because the symptoms are very generic.

I am considering doing a vrigin coconut oil detox the way that is described by Good Samaritan on his website. The objective is to help control my addiction to sugars, that I believe might be caused by candida. Has anyone else tried it?Do you have any advice?

In terms of ATHLETES, I vote for contemporary athletes. After all, contemporary athletes have much better training facilities, better medical care and devote their entire time to athletic performace.

However the fitness level of a normal Athenian would be far superior obviously. The type of work people used to perform at those times was mainly physical. No desk jobs at that time

Tyler,  you are underestimating the know-how of the ancient Atenians in ship building. Even though we have much greater theoretical knowledge, modern scientists could never build a trireme that would be as fast as the ancient greek ones at their first try. When you go from theory to practice,there is a very great leap and optimization takes a long time.

Let me give you an example: the turks used to make the best bows before firearms replaced this weapon, using horn from sheep, sinew and various types of wood. Their record distance for shooting an arrow was almost 900m. Even though we know what materials they used, when modern historians and bow makers try to replicate their old bows,they cannot come close to that distance. Why? Because there are too many detais that will afect the performance. The same principle should apply to the trireme case.

Regarding the fitness levelof the Athenians, you are problably correct that they had much higher fitness levels than today normal people.

The most famous case is problably when after the battle of the Marathon, a foot messenger was sent to Sparta and he arrived there the day after he departed from Athens. His name was Pheidippides and the distance that he travelled is around 250 km. For many years, this was thought to be just legend, because nobody believed that it would be possible for a human being to run a distance of 250 km continuosly ( in less than 36 hours). But in 1982 a team of 3 lead by John Foden was able to run from Athens to Sparta in less than 36 hours proving that the story was true. Following this result an organized event was created, called the SPARTATHLON and every year athletes try to complete the same distance in less than 36 hours.

Does anybody have any idea howlong would it take for someone to get cured of candida on ZC? Since the candida feed on sugar after some time without any, it will die. But how long would that be?

I totally disagree with the conclusions ofthe study for 2 reasons:
- the ancient triremes would  be much faster than this modern times replica. The old people were masters at optimizing the existing technology of the time.
- the rowers would be much better at rowing and specially at working together in a coordinated way than the persons who attempted to row for the short time that the experience took

Drawing conclusions from such a simple experience is in my opinion totally incorrect.

In the Phillipines you should be okay with raw food, because you have the company and advice of goodsamaritan. This is a region where having a local friend and guide will make all the difference and will allow you to experience things that tourists dont usually do.
In the other countries,I would be extremelly carefull.

I have lived in Indonesia,Jakarta,for 3 years and I have done a lot of traveling in Southeast Asia. My advice to you as a westerner in terms of health is that there are 2 dangers:

- traffic. It is caothic and dangerous,compared to western countries. You are maybe 100 times more likely to die in a car or motorcycle accident then by a shark attack. I have known several persons that have had very serious accidents and unfortunatly the health facilities are often not very good, except in Singapore ,Malaysia and maybe Thailand. Carefull when riding motorcycles.
- food. This is problematic to most westerns,as we are not used to the microrganisms of these countries. It is normall to have diarrea and other gastointestinal problems when you arrive. Amebas can also be very dangerous. I would be very carefull with eating raw meat and fish in some of these countries. The fact that you are eating in a five star hotel is not a guarranty of safety.

Malaria is a problem only in certain areas, most of the touristic places are malaria free. As for vacines, a large percentage of the population in some countries has Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis,so you might want to consider getting vacinated for these two.
Crime is not a problem in Southeast Asia and even the big cities are safe, except in Cambodja where there are lots of guns, but be carefull with credit card frauds.
Dont touch any drugs in these countries, you can get in very, very serious problems just for smoking a joint.
A good way to explore the region is with low-cost air companies. Air Asia, from Malaysia,has very good safety records and covers almost every county. I recomended it.

I really love Southeast Asia, the people, the scenery,the food, etc. I am sure that you will have a very interesting time. Be carefull with the ladies and STD.

How many meals you take every day,how much meat, fat,etc? Do you exercise regularly?
I am thinking of trying ZC because of potential mental benefits. How long did it take for you to improve mentally?

I just found about this strange and little known wild wolf from South America called the manned wolf. What is very interesting is that it is an omnivorous canine and vegetable matter, especially fruits and tubers,account for more than 50% of his diet,acording to some authors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maned_wolf

It is fascinating that within the canine family,there is a species that has very different diet from the rest of the family members. This example raises several questions about trying to determine what our natural diet might be.

So, how much raw meat can a person eat safely on a daily basis? I know that there is no hard proof, but is someone consuming 1 kg of beef daily? More than that?

Just realized I was having a bad reaction to Olive Oil. I was consuming a lot of Olive Oil mixed with my raw meat and vegetables, maybe more than 1oo ml every day. Two weeks ago, I started feeling tired, nauseous and sometimes dizzy, especially after exercise. My body was also somewhat swollen. I thought it could be some detox, but after having no olive oil for one day,I began to feel much better. I have stopped consuming olive oil, but I still have the problem of which fats I should use.

The beef ground meat that I usually eat has plenty of fat, but I am not sure if it is enough. Maybe pig lard might be the best of the worst.

I found it impossible to eat olive oil for a long time, or combine with raw meat.

I think standard butter is the best of the worst. But try and get suet like tyler said.

Since I live In Portugal, south of Europe, I have poor access to raw butter and several other animal fats. However, olive oil is widelly available. Will I experience the same benefits from olive oil as from animal fats?

The problem with honey is hat it starts to cristalyse after some time, some types of honey more quickly than others. While this doesnt affect the nutricional properties of the honey, from a purelly comercially point of view it is much more difficult to sell. Consumers want liquid honey to spread on toasts and so on.

If the treated with heat, it becomes liquid again.
I doubt that it is possible to get unheated honey from large commercial beekepers,problably only from farmers and so on, that also produce some honey as a suplement to their activity.

Pigs have a smal intestine of 15 to 20 meters, and wild boars are omnivorous, even though most of their nutrition comes from plants, fruits, acorns and so on. But when they have the chance to eat some animal,mainly insects,larvae, they will do it.

Our small intestine is much smaller, between 6 to 7 meters, therefore our ability to use nutrients from plants should be much inferior to the pig, which suggests a greater tendency for eating animal foods.

I dont think that I am ready for high meat yet  ;D. I am just starting with seafood now. The sardines ae excellent and so is some other fresh fish. Has any one tried squid? What about frozen shrimps?

In my country, Portugal, we have an old breed of pig called the black pig. This pig is raised and grows all its life in the open country, eating only natural foods like herbs and acorns from the oak tree.
The meat from this black pig is complettely diferent from the regular ones. It has this natural fat stripes and the taste is really outstanding. I have only eaten cooked so far.

Do you think that it would be safe to try this black pig raw? I have to confess that I am worried about parasites. But the truth is that I am getting bored with beef and want to try some different meat.

I have noticed some improvement in my mental abilities, but nowhere near the improvement that I have experienced at a physicallevel.
William,you say that the biggest improvement happened after starting zero carb. Can you elaborate a little more, how long did it take you to feel the difference?

Hi, first of all I would like to thank everyody on this forum for their contribution, for taking the time to write and help others with their advice. I have started with raw food aproximatelly one month and a half ago and the benefits have been remarkable. This diet has been changing my life and many persons here helped me in that.

For a long time I had tried to loose weight,but never had any good results ( 177 cm and 98 kgs). I exercise a lot, jogging around 50 km per week and have already completed 2 half-marathons ( I am currently training for the marathon) , but still  I could not loose weight. The exercise always made me incredebly hungry and I would eat more to compensate. After trying several diets, the one that seemed to work better was Atkins and after reviewing a forum about high protein diets, I came across raw paleo.

Af first I thought it was completelly stupid :D, but I remembered that whenever I used to eat good quality sashimi,I would always feel good after. Also,I have many health issues and a lot of members say that they have expierenced several healings after starting with a raw diet,so I decided to try.
I dont eat raw meat and fish only, I also eat fruit,some vegetables,like carrot or tomatoes and olive oil.

After one and half months, I am feelling incredibilly better . I am down to 91 kg and dont limit my portion sizes, my sinusite has improved tremendously and I can breathe much better, I have much more energy feel much less tired (dont need naps anymore after lunch), my hair is not falling so much,my allergies are much better also. I can also see better, I have no idea why.

Since I exercise very regularly, I can really notice the influence of raw food in my body. Before, when I used to do a long run of 20km or more, the next day my legs would hurt and I could not walk very much. Two sundays ago I ran f 30km and the next day I was fine. It is incredible how fast my body can recover now.

I have a couple of questions that maybe people around here can help me with:

- bee polen - has anyone tried it as a suplemment? It is very rich in several vitamins, aminoacids and rare elements

- I suffer from attention deficit disorder. Has anyone experienced benefits from raw diet relating to concentration, ability to focus, etc? How fast does your mental health improve as compared to your body?

- about chicken, I can not get any organic ones. Should I tried the regular or it is not worth it?

- mutton liver - is it any good? how do you eat it? what are the benefits?

I have many more questions, but for now these are enough.
