Plums and Nectarines
« on: March 05, 2016, 06:48:14 pm »
Hi guys,

I was at a supermarket today and I chanced upon Australian plums and nectarines.

Thought I would open a thread dedicated to plums and nectarines.

They look the same to me except for some shades of color.

The names on the labels were:

- Plum October Sun
- Plum Black Majestic
- Yellow Nectarine
- White Nectarine

They were all priced at P 239.00 per kilo.

I ate two, don't know which, but they both tasted really good!

They are not too sweet, just refreshing.

1. I'm wondering in your experience, how much is safe to eat of these fruits?

2. Any advice on peeling?  I ate the peels.

3. Any advice, tips, what to look for, what other varieties are there.  What is the difference between plums and nectarines?

These are all so new to me.  It's exciting!

Both plums and nectarines are common here. Nectarines are non-fuzzy peaches. Like peaches, there are cling and freestone types. The flesh can be white or orange/yellow.

Plums are related but have a different texture to the flesh, and there are cultivars with all sorts of different skin colors ranging from yellow and green through the reds, blues, and purples, all the way to nearly black.

There are lots of hybrids with names like pluot, plumcot, and apriums (plum/apricot). The Prunus species varieties graft and hybridize well for all sorts of tasty fruits.

The skin of either can be bitter or bland.

Don't overeat plums, in my experience. They're great in moderation, for me. Nectarines are just awesome, but it's hard to find ripe, sweet ones.

Is this your first time having plums and nectarines?  Plums are one of my favorite fruits.

Fruits are as about as dangerous as water, I don't understand all the fear of fruits on this forum.

Overdo them enough, and you'll see. Plus, people's ability to tolerate fruit varies greatly, believe it.

Peoples abilities to tolerate anything vary greatly...See Vegans for example. Meat is murder for some idiots.
