I haven't read the link yet, but in my opinion they might even be worse, as nicotine is a highly damaging drug that people get addicted to. Whereas the other damage from smoking is never seen as a positive by the user, restricting the amount somewhat, with e-cigarettes / vapes, the addict is incentivized to consume ever larger amounts of nicotine. This nicotine is also artificial, which is probably worse than the one directly from the tobacco plant, even though the other is burned at a higher temperature, and the artificial one is "cooked" at a lower temp.

A possible way to reduce the damage would be to vaporize actual tobacco leaves rather than burning them. Perhaps a temperature of 160C would produce less toxins than when tobacco is burned normally at around 800C. Then again, rather than going through all that trouble, it's probably easier just to stop introducing all forms of tobacco/nicotine into your body.
