Ultrasone headphones, while expensive, do seem to solve the issue re air-pressure/sound-pressure and the eardrums etc. Since I can't afford them, I've gone in for DirectSound's Extreme Plus 29 headphones, the sort used by drummers. I am already reducing the sound volume considerably, overall, anyway.

Quite agree with this.    I was told the most frequent reason for airmen failing to qualify for service as air crew was found to be damaged hearing.   This probably applies in the other services with different limitations from impaired hearing.    Intense pressure from worn attachments is arguably worse than loud sound distributed from loudspeakers.
