The correct way to open them is to smash them with a large rock, its more paleo.
I keep a rock on hand for such occasions.

an easier way,, is to take a pair of plyers and break of the very end, which will then leave a nice entry point to use an oyster knife.  So easy to enter in to it.

I make an entry point by smacking the very end a couple of times with the back end of a medium sized knife, then prying it open. Its real quick but it may cause shards of shell to fly around.

While van's method is no doubt more intelligent, the usually recommended practice is to use an oyster-knife to prise open the shells on the side, while having a thick towel on the other side, held by the other hand, so as to prevent injuries.
