Question re youtube software
« on: December 18, 2010, 07:42:11 pm »
With my current mac computer, I am unable to access certain youtube videos. I have already uploaded the latest adobe flash player but was wondering what other software updates I will have to install in order to watch any and all videos on youtube. Any suggestions welcome!

you have that java program? try turning it on update it or download it if you dont have it.
but you said you cant watch only some videos so i think you have java :D

erm what do you mean cant watch videos? what do you have a black square without the control buttons?
or is it a message that says "video currently cant be viewed blah blah blah" ?

if java is not the case try this
turn off all antivirus and firewall unistall flash
download the new one install it -> turn on antivirus and firewall.

if its still wont work post some more details:D

The youtube video comes up with the play etc. buttons below, but all I get is a black screen where the video should be , with a small circling array of dots in the very centre, implying that my computer is trying to get the video to start but can't for some reason.

It sounds like there's no issue with flash, but rather, an issue with the internet connection. The circling dots mean that the video can't play because it's in the process of being downloaded.

I have this problem once in a while. Refreshing the web page, or disconnecting and reconnecting to the internet sometimes solves it. Or the problem could be on youtube's end. The youtube videos are presumably distributed over many servers. If there's an issue with one particular server, then some videos may not download, or download very slowly, while others work fine.

when ur playing a youtube video: press pause, and then press play, then hold the left arrow on ur keyboard for about 5-10 seconds, then hit the up arrow.

Edit: I mean, once you get youtube working, then try this =)

In the examples above, I found the play button greyed out, along with the other buttons, so could not activate it anyway.  The current ones I have been trying are the red dwarf tv series  videos on youtube.

Sometimes it's because connection is too slow or not enough bandwidth.Shouldn't have anything to do with Mac vs PC.

However, some videos load better than others depending on the source.

Since no one is responding I will take an uneducated shot in the dark.

Do you have;

adobe flash player 10?
Real player
flip4mac

I am assuming you are using OS 10 with a 7 year old machine.

Whenever I have a problem I go to:

http://forums.macworld.com/index.php?

Very helpful, lots of posters and some posters I suspect are Apple employees.

No, I think it's OS 9. I think I tried to install some version of OS 10, and it wouldn't allow it.

I'll slowly check the other stuff. Never heard of flip4mac.

Try the mac site first.
flip4mac allows you to open certain videos.

Wow you're using OS 9. You must take very good care of your machine or it was a high end model.

Go up to the Apple icon at the top left of the screen click on it and bring down the menu, then click on "about this mac".
This will tell you your operating system somewhere in there.

I haven't used 9 since my original iMac Bondi Blue died in around I think 2004. Power pack died.

When you pull down that Apple menu click on "software update".

Also there is a widget for checking for software updates. It's fantastic. it's donate-ware. It checks for updates on all software including non-Apple stuff.

Do you ever run repair software like Disc Utility?

Click on Hard drive icon on desktop
them click on "applications"
then scroll down to "utilities" and click on it
then go down to "Disk Utility" double click on it
When it opens click on "Macintosh HD",
make sure "first aid" is selected and
then select "repair disc permissions"
Takes 5 minutes or so.
Then just for good measure I select "verify disc" and when that's finished,
"repair disc" if it is available.

Then when you bought your computer I suspect that you got a disc called "Techtool". They were giving it away some years. There are various versions. I have bought this for each computer and have bought the latest version of the "Pro" version. It looks for problems of a bunch of different types.
Some might say I am anal but I put it in my iCal program to remind me to run these programs on mine and my GF's computers about every 2 months.

I also bought discwarrior. I run that every two months. To me it's like washing up, I just do it.
Cheers

There is some place you can go, type in your serial # and find out the date of manufacture. I can't seem to find it on mine. To get your serial #click the Apple then holding the control key click on "version", it will scroll between the build and the serial # or you can simply click on "more info" then Hardware then look at the second from the bottom.

Here is a forum for probs

Let me know if it helps.
