Are Herbal Teas Paleo?
« on: November 27, 2011, 10:33:47 am »
What was used as medicine before the advent of cooking? Whole medicinal herbs? Or were they soaked in water?

Do steeped teas cause the same problem as cooked foods?

They simply used the whole herb. Perhaps they dried some of them, but I seriously doubt they soaked them in water, prior to cooking. There would have been no need to do so in those days, and soaking in water would make the herbs last less long.

Steeped teas will be "less worse" (as regards toxin-creation via heat) than some cooked foods, such as cooked animal foods and foods not cooked completely in moisture,  but that's all. That said, if one has a particular health-problem and finds some herbal teas useful for that, by all means try it. I doubt herbal teas are good for anything but temporarily resolving certain symptoms, though.

I don't think they're paleo at all. I know herbs gave me some help previously, but they're not worth it for me anymore. I've been through all kinds of high quality herbal systems. At least fresh pressing or extracting vegetable juices are raw. You can also blend fresh wild-cultivated forest herbs with water and strain to make green water.  I'd say until you learn to use organs, glands, various types of animals, fats, highmeats etc as healing material, use herbs which are not as good.

And how about juicing? I bought an expensive Omega juicer in my raw vegan years and now it is covered with dirt. I would like to use it but I reckon 100% apple juice would be too acidic and too sweet in long term. On the other hand, I can juice green vegetables but they dont taste very well without sweet fruit...

People have complained of getting long-term nutritional deficiencies as a result of long-term juicing(1 big glass of raw veggie juice a day or more). Not ideal. I also had the very strange experience of quickly getting constant liquid diarrhea from drinking raw juiced veg, as my body seemed incapable of absorbing it.

If you want to try it, use taste-enhancing sweeteners like raw honey or raw cream(if you can tolerate raw dairy). Or perhaps always add a percentage of sweet fruit or carrots.
