Hey all new here!
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:56:11 am »
Hey guys I'm new here, coming from a raw vegan background.  To be honest I didn't really feel bad eating vegan foods I just sort of didn't want to get caught up in the dogma that any one diet is "right" so to challenge my beliefs I started to eat raw fish.  I was under the impression that I was going to throw up and that my athletic performance would suffer and I would have bad recovery.  Well that never really happened so I am just kind of going with the flow.

I do find that in the past in my vegan/high raw vegan days I would resort to eating grains because I needed the energy and with the addition of meat and other foods I feel like I don't have to resort to eating grains; which I am grateful for that.  I always felt like I was compromising my health by eating grains occasionally.

I did the old 811 for a while too and it was good in the beginning I never really felt like is was sustainable long term just from the sheer amount of food you have to consume and you pretty much have to eat around the clock which isn't fun because there's a lot of other things I could be doing with my time.  I do think that the time doing that was well spent because I have such a great appreciation of fruit and it digests really well and it's still a part of my diet.

So what am I eating these days?  Pretty much I am still eating a lot of fruit but also wild caught raw salmon, shellfish (cooked), chicken, sweet potatoes alot of veggies like kale, spinach ect.  eggs.  I haven't gotten into eating beef or pork yet because I am still researching where to get some really good local pastured meats.  I would really like to get pork and beef from people who let their livestock eat their natural diet.  So for beef all grass-fed and not grain finished and for pork a diet of tubers and whatever else it is that pigs eat, but not grains.  I've talked with a few farmers who fit the bill so in the next few weeks I am going to be adding those foods into my diet.

I might try some raw milk there is a guy at the farmers market that sells it, i've never been a fan of the texture of milk growing up but I'll give it a shot just to see what it's like.  I also am interested in learning how to make raw yogurts, kombucha and pro-biotics. I have also thought about growing my own algae's as well mostly because it sounds interesting.  Anyways there's so much stuff to learn it's all so interesting and I love eating foods and learning about different cultures.

Good to meed all of you guys!

Welcome to the forum! Most people, myself included, usually try a raw-animal-food-type diet only after having experienced some nasty health-problems which other diets failed to solve. So, it's quite refreshing to come across people who are willing to try this sort of diet for other reasons.

Welcome.

I eat clams and oysters raw.  Delicious.  Try it.

Green mussels here taste bitter to me raw. So I dont eat mussels.

Squid and shrimp are great raw shellfish.

One thing I have noticed when I started to add more meat and fish into a high fruit diet like 811 is that I don't feel the need to stuff 3000 calories of food down my gullet all the time.

It's nice to eat some eggs and raw fish and be satiated for hours and be ok with not being hungry every hour.

I don't know about raw shellfish! Lol I know growing we lived on one of the finger lakes in upstate NY and it seems like every night someone would be eating raw shellfish!  I honestly don't even know why that would even gross me out!

@Tyler I know a lot of people have health problems eating vegan foods or 100% vegan.  I think some are even in denial because of the dogma and the "spiritual" aspect of veganism and that somehow if they eat some eggs or a little bit of meat that they would somehow become impure and it would be a major sin or something.  It's kind of weird but it's like veganism is taking over the role that the catholic church held.  It seems like there is a lot of self hate and self denial in the movement.  Even at the expense of their own health and well being!!

I mean I think we can all make the argument that concentrated feed lots are not humane, but there is still a lot of grey area in pastured meats and eggs.  I am challenging long held beliefs but I want to live free of dogma really.

Welcome!

mmmm Kombucha. I found that this replaced any cravings I had for carbonated beverages.

Yeah, the 811 might work for some people, but you just have to eat SO MUCH! Four pounds of fruit for breakfast? No thanks.

Good luck with the raw milk. I've never had it personally- it's illegal in my area and I've been unable to find it, but I've had friends tell me that it is completely different than pasteurized milk.

Ya I hated being "stuffed" all the time.  I still LOVE fruit though.  Mango's and papaya being my favorite =)  I don't really buy into the avoid fruit camp that some paleo sites promote, I love fruit and meat damnit and it keeps me way from the damn grains!!
