Country Flags in Memberlist
« on: October 28, 2008, 10:31:53 am »
I've been working on a request from one of our moderators for the country flags to be listed in the members list. The flags are there now but you cannot sort by country until I can figure out the correct syntax for that function.

If you haven't, you might consider joining the forum for SMF administrators and ask about it there.

:D How long would it take to get to the half a million posts required to apply?

I've already posted a query in another thread. :-)

Also, the beyond veg debunked page is driving me nuts! I can't see any difference in code between the text that overlaps the external graphics and the ones that don't! Maddening!  >:

That class is defined in the css page (obviously).  You will have to adjust it there.  I would recommend stripping the graphics out of the article page, and/or stripping it off the site altogether by removing it from the css page.  I tweaked it here and there, but never had the time to look into it properly.  You could look into it yourself too, of course.  There is a ton of info on css all over the place.  Go to the specs when in doubt at w3.org.

Good luck and may the force be with you.

Thanks for the guidance, oh precious one! I didn't even think it'd be in the css because it renders properly everywhere else.

I told myself I'd pretend like the transfer hadn't taken place till next month as originally planned but I can't.  :)

I'd rather not strip them out. I will find a way eventually. That's my tenacious, little,  -d -ish side that you call OCD.  :D

That's because in all other places, the external graphics are in headers and not the body of a paragraph.  And plus, there's no image tag where ever it shows up, so it must be elsewhere (ie on the style sheet). That's the whole point of having a style sheet.  Define it there and it happens site wide, with none of the style elements in html pages that search engines are now frowning on heavily when indexing sites.  And, of course, you could define other styles for different pages of the site, if you wanted.

You will have your work cut out for you learning css.  But there are many books out there too.  Just please remember to save a backup copy or play with a totally different css file.  I cannot fix or consult with you on problems that may arise concerning the style sheet.  It would be more time consuming than the actual updates!  CSS is a huge subject, and I mean huge.  That's why custom web developers get the big bucks (anyone can use precanned software to create websites (but they won't be neat and clean)).  You will become part of the few, the proud, the custom designers.  And remember browsers render different aspects of styles differently.  So if it works in one place, don't assume you didn't f*** it up elsewhere.  So please do your homework first before playing around with anything but a copy of it.  And enjoy!

Oh, and javascript is good and necessary too.  You need to get one good book on that as well.  In fact, many developers are working on using javascript to enable the more advanced css3 attributes rather than wait for browser makers to come up to speed.

I know, I know - geek speak.  However, The Craig did bring up the external links graphics here, so I replied here.

And I still think in the short term they should just be stripped out of the byv debunking article.  Just make a note in the top paragraph that all links go outside the site.  Else add a target=" _blank" to every anchor tag on the page so that the links open in new windows, or if the browser is new, new tabs.

I already stripped them off that page by giving it its own css file. I'll make the note later.
I was reading about some css3 code that detects off-site links and marks it with the image automatically but is probably not supported yet. That hard core stuff is going to have to wait for now.  :)

I had always heard not to get into web developing because the jobs were so easily outsourced abroad for next to nothing. It's nice to see it isn't so with custom web developing.

Keith, I'm waiting for my Geek to English book myself.  ;D

All I can say is Thank God there are other people out there who can do all the tech-savvy stuff that I just can't! I suppose I'll have to learn this all myself now, though - I've been given the impression that you're a nobody unless you have your own blog or website, so I've started a tentative one, now.

Cool! Where is it?

You wouldn't be interested. It's only a science-fiction-vintage-book-oriented-page at the moment, so I haven't have the courage to show it for another year or so, until it's fully indexed etc, at which time  I hope it will become more influential and a first of its kind. I may branch out to include a separate raw-diet-sphere to the blog, but that will take a long time. For now, I have to conquer my innate horror at writing any form of diary.
