raw cow brains and fat
« on: May 10, 2012, 06:47:08 am »
Hello raw paleo people.

I just ordered two cow brains, 9 lbs of chuck roast, and 5 lbs of raw beef fat.

I'm hoping to hear any of your stories, if any of you have consumed brain before.

I'm looking to rebuild all my body parts (brain included) using the nutrients in the brain, as well as in the fat.

I read online that kids who ate brains developed healthier brains.

Any way, any info you guys can give me. If it's disgusting, its taste, just anything. I've never had brain before. Thanks :)

I eat cow brains. They are completely different from most other organs that I have eaten, but not disgusting at all. I really have no "story" about them - I don't think my brain has been rebuilt or anything like that.

I found them pretty disgusting. Others seem to like them a lot. Seemed very slimy to me. I only had it once though so it may have been just that brain.

May I ask where you ordered the brains from? Like, will they ship anywhere in the US or are they local to you? Are they grass-fed? Just asking because I've never found grass-fed brains available from anywhere

If you don't like how they taste, you can use the leftovers for tanning leather...

Ahhhhhhh, don't waste grass fed brain on tanning!!!!! (sorry gc, I'm all about tanning, but we have easy access to oils, brains are too precious to waste, I've had a fuck of a time trying to even get them here in MN/WI, fuck the government(and our complacency))

Troll, aversion to the texture 'slimy' is learned behaviour, also, I found them to be creamy and delicious in all cases, though I've only had raw pig and squirrel, and cooked from cow.

However, if the butcher is sloppy and they get pieces of skull in there, you may wish to pick them out first, as it quite ruins the smoothe, creamy, slightly salty, deliciousness that is the mammal brain.

I don't know if you have aajonus' book, but he has some recipes for smoothies that include brain I believe, can grab it for you if need be.

Good luck, start preparing yourself now to enjoy and savor the texture, instead of catering to the pussy brainwashing we all get from our uber-squemish culture (oh no, germs, dirt, sticky, slimy, pungent, etc ad nauseum.

I have had pig and cow and the small cord like brain of fish. Cow was my least favorite. It was kind of watery, and had an after taste I had a hard time adjusting to, it did't season it at all.  Pig was creamy, pleasant, but some folks are still saying pig is bad raw so I'm on the fence, I liked every organ on the pig better than cow except heart. Cow heart is fantastic, and the fat off of  the top is the most primo fat, but that is just my opinion, I don't know if it is good for your brain. It makes sense to me that brain fat (mylin) would help it to heal. Central nerve cells aren't known to regenerate, but the fat tissue and supportive cells do. I'm going to try sheep but that won't be for about a month

as far as the fish goes. I get free carcuses with heads from my fish market. I crack the brains, eat the eyes and boil the bones for soup. I sound like the wicked witch, when I read that >D.
They are frozen, and watery, but I still like them, a lot. Maybe they would help, and free good food is nice

I don't want to make an illegal post, but if you can't eat it raw cooked cow brain in polenta, with salt, pepper, cayenne and raisons, is supposed to be good. Maybe if you cooked the other stuff into a thick porridge, you could mix in the brain, as it cools. Then, at least the animal food is still raw. I think salt and pepper alone would be enough to make it tasty to you. Let us know.

BSE is insidious...

a perevrted protein (shape) that turns all the other proteins into a weird shape.
It's in the food chain.

In the Paleo period, grazing animals were not fed deadbrains of other animals.

There is useful fats in  brain, but they can be gained elsewhere.

Isn't mad cow disease something that only needs to be worried about in cows fed traditional food stuffs (soy, left over ground cows).

I'm getting cow brains from organic pasture fed cows.

Is there any risk?

The only case of BSE recently in the US was in California, so don't eat brains from California cows, to be safe.

The wikipedia link suggests it is still possible for a prion caused disease to appear in US animals in the future (though you are much more likely to kill yourself by slipping over in the shower) ...

Practices in the United States relating to BSE
...In 1997, regulations prohibited the feeding of mammalian byproducts to ruminants such as cattle and goats. However, the byproducts of ruminants can still be legally fed to pets or other livestock, including pigs and poultry, such as chickens. In addition, it is legal for ruminants to be fed byproducts from some of these animals.[43] A proposal to end the use of cattle blood, restaurant scraps, and poultry litter (fecal matter, feathers)[44] in January 2004 has yet to be implemented.[45]
