Escolar (Butterfish)
« on: April 27, 2014, 04:30:44 am »
I recently heard about a fish known as "butterfish," that's supposed to be a very high fat, oily fish. Coincidentally, I also tried "white tuna" sashimi while out with my boyfriend's mom the other day. I looked up butterfish because I saw it being sold at the fish market I go to, and found that sometimes "butterfish" which is actually escolar, can be sold in sushi restaurants mislabeled as "white tuna." Anyways, I really liked the "white tuna" at the restaurant, so I wouldn't really mind getting it from the market, since escolar is supposed to be fatty. But I read some weird stuff online about side effects and toxicity ...

"Escolar's wax ester content can cause keriorrhea (Greek: flow of wax), gempylotoxism or gempylid fish poisoning.[4] Keriorrhea is similar to diarrhea, only the body will expel yellowish-orange drops of oil instead of liquid bowel movements. Some individuals suffering from escolar-induced keriorrhea also report other digestive issues, including stomach cramps, diarrhea, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and anal leakage; onset may occur between 30 minutes and 36 hours following consumption.[5] This condition may also be referred to as steatorrhea."

I didn't experience this myself when eating what was most likely escolar, but I also only had three pieces of it, and it said less than 6 oz will let you avoid the symptoms. But it even says that Italy and Japan has completely banned the sales of the fish because it's considered toxic.

I was wondering if anyone here eats escolar? If it's what I tasted at the restaurant, I really, really liked it. But I just want to know if the side effects are concerning.

I've never heard of escolar, but wax esters are produced by human skin cells as well. I can't imagine they would cause so much upset for a healthy person.
My basic health philosophy:

1. If it is advertized on TV, don't touch it.
2. If it is recommended in the news, do the opposite.
3. If it makes most people afraid, it might be good for you.

I have eaten raw butterfish on occasion and I twice experienced this very weird anal leakage thing during sleep. I have thus avoided this food for  some time now.

My dad had one.  It was labeled something else at the store so they did not know.  He said it was very good.  He did have a massive oily diarrhea the next day (luckily he was at home).

Well, to my disappointment, the "butterfish" at the market was black cod according to the guy. But he told me it was his favorite fish (though I hadn't confirmed if that was when cooked or raw), and insisted that I'd love it. It was ... weird. Had a strong taste, very salty, but somehow bland overall. After a few bites, I didn't want it anymore. It did feel oily in the mouth, so I assume there was some fat.

Sad night for us. I wanted to try escolar even if there were side effects.

I love escolar. As long as I eat less than 5-6 ounces, I have no problem.  However, it definitely causes oily farts if I eat more than that.  The flavor is amazing, though.

I wish the butterfish at the market had been escolar. I want to try it soooo bad!

Trust me, the oily stuff out the back end is a major disincentive! Eat it in tiny amounts.
