OK< I know nothing about creating websites, but would like to set up a Science Fiction resource page for the general public, with a sort of database of tables etc. so that people can find a science fiction story or novel they're looking for even if they just know a tiny bit of the story. I understand that there are free or very nearly free  websites/domains on offer, out there? Anyone know what's the cheapest way to get this sorted out without hassle and how does one go about it? It's just that I figure that I will need only the most basic kind of website as I'm no good at the technical stuff.

I doubt you will ever find a free website, but you will get a free domain (although they only cost $10 a year anyway) if you sign up for hosting with bluehost.com for 1 year, which costs $6.95 a month.  They have free tools like forum software and wikis (you'd want the latter) that you and your techie helper* can set up and you'd be in business.  godaddy.com is another good hosting company, but their site is so busy with crap, I hate having to go there to do anything.  But they are comparable.  Maybe you have UK companies that would be better?

*You should find someone in your sci fi world, which should be relatively easy, to help you out with details and maintenance.

Thanks, I'll get onto it, eventually. I prefer to do this myself, even if it takes a hell of a long time. I mean, most people have their own website, nowadays.

These are just some of the CMS (content management systems) that Blue Host will auto install for you. They are meant for non-techy people.

Two choices of wiki software, which you already have some experience with:
