Question about eating raw seafood
« on: November 30, 2011, 11:14:24 am »
Can I eat raw fish, such as salmon and cod, as I do raw beef?  How long will it stay good in my refer or freezer?  Is there anything special I have to do with it?
I eat to live, not live to eat.

No, it will kill you instantly.

0.0003 seconds, after which it becomes lethal poison.

Yeah, flush it down the toilet.

The mad scientist must have drunk one of his special potions again and may not be much help right now.

You can eat anything raw, as long as your body is detox'd enough to deal with anything living in it. If you are unsure, then it is best to wait until you have cleansed your system for a while by green juicing and eating raw meats from cow, which is the least risky. Then once you are a little bit more confident mentally, and healthy physically, then try the foods that are typically considered more risky. I regularly eat raw pig heart from pastured pig and have come to no harm, quite the opposite. But 4 years ago when I started, I would only eat cow and lamb raw.

You can freeze it for about as long as you like, certain foods will freezer burn faster than others but there is no point where it's inedible, only less palatable. Similarly you can eat it no matter how rotten it gets, it's actually easier to digest when rotten, but the flavor is obviously much stronger and may not be palatable to you unless you have a strong constitution.

No special prep neccessary, can be eaten as is from store. Make sure you read the newbie section if you haven't so you know what to look for in raw animal foods. Seafood must be wildcaught, land animals either wild or pastured (more accurately they should be eating as closely to their natural diet as possible). No farmed fish, no conventional or confinement animals.

Thanks for the info.  I think I'll wait on seafood for a while.

I've been eating raw fish and seafood, as in sashimi. I didn't wait. I get the best fish I can, fresh, wild, sometimes frozen, usually not frozen. Most of what I eat is beef, but I like good fish and seafood regularly. Some examples: salmon, tuna, red snapper, halibut, squid, scallops, oysters, mussels, mackerel.

You don't have to wait to eat anything. I don't really believe in the whole detox thing either. But just go at your own pace...the more you eat it, the more you'll see there's nothing to fear when it comes to raw meat. Make sure the fish is wild though. Also, meat never "goes bad", that's a myth.

LOL

OK, here are the real answers:
Can I eat raw fish, such as salmon and cod, as I do raw beef?
Of course, why not?

It depends on how you store it and whether you like the taste of stinkfish (fermented fish) or not. I found that when I made tinkfish first developed an ammonia taste and smell. I couldn't be bothered with having to air it out every so often while I waited for it to get beyond that point, so I tossed it, but the Eskimos like to let it get really ripe--about a year--at which point the taste is probably very mild, and then eat it.

You could probably also freeze it for a year or more, making a guess.

It depends on what purpose you are trying to achieve.

Wild sashimi-quality fish is tres expensive, so I like to buy it fresh and eat it the same day. You could also start out eating it at a sushi restaurant (it will likely be farmed, but still high quality) to get over any modern hangups about raw fish.

I forgot to mention that that is of course, just my opinion, everyone has varying views of the role and affects of microorganisms in the body. I am of the opinion that if you have been SAD or have a lot of toxins in your body (you're a firefighter right, been exposed to much smoke/particulates?) then you're providing a playground for them and better to cleanse the system before inviting them in to do their cleanup ('parasites' aka janitors).  You might not experience any issues, but then again you might and being new to raw paleo eating may be frightened off when it's really just a matter of sticking with it until you've regenerated that diseased tissue.

Anyway, there's no reason not to take it slow, the risks outweigh the benefits, this isn't a race, this is about health. But to each their own and that is something you've got to decide for yourself.
