Home at last!
« on: January 14, 2012, 08:15:59 pm »
Hello Everyone!

I am very glad to be here, making my first post on this forum. I have never participated in any forum before because I usually just read and learn, but I have benefited so much from reading this forum and from eating a raw paleo diet that I am compelled join you and seek more active membership in this little community.

I have tried numerous diets and ways of eating (incl. standard Irish diet; vegetarian; high grain, cooked vegan; high fruit, low fat vegan; high grain, low fat, moderate protein "balanced" cooked omnivorous diet; and cooked paleo diet) and they all had some negative effects and left me dissatisfied and searching for improvements. I discovered this forum back in April 2011 and began to transition to a raw paleo diet. Since moving to the UK in July I have been almost totally raw paleo. I have never felt or looked better. I have no health issues at all. I have never followed a single way of eating for such a long time without any negative effects. It is also a huge bonus to never have to think about food preparation - I don't blend, grind, mix, soak, dehydrate, or ferment any of my foods. I just can't be bothered. I just wash my produce and chop my meat and I'm ready to eat! I do not think I will ever have reason to change my way of eating again. I think I have found my true home here.

I have read a lot on this forum and would like to thank everyone here for sharing their knowledge and experiences. Particular thanks to Tyler who eased my fears about raw meat and answered my questions as Raw Paleo Guy over on allexperts.com.

The only problems with this diet are that it can be difficult, expensive and time-consuming to source high-quality foods, and many of the practices of this diet (such as mono-meals and eating raw animal foods) are stigmatized by our society. Especially in England, I find that if someone sees me eating something as simple as, say, seven oranges in one sitting, or two heads of lettuce with no dressing or other ingredients, they will think I am a freak. It's just not civilized, it's just not polite, it's not the done thing. That is why I am so glad to be a member of this forum and look forward to making friends with some like-minded people.

Best regards,

Mark

Welcome. I can see from your picture that you have noticed the one downside to this diet, that in men it causes extra body hair.

Welcome to the forum! Just thought I'd mention, though, that RVAF diets do sometimes require some preparation. For example, there's "high-meat". Also some raw animal foods like crabs require other implements such as hammers to get at the flesh etc.

As regards raw meat sources, I suppose you've already tried the UK organic food online directories plus local farmers' markets?

Thanks goodsamaritan, I read your blogs regularly and they are very inspirational. You seem to be doing the most of all of us to actually spread information about this way of eating to the public at large. Has there been much interest from people in the Phillipines? I look forward to chatting with you more in the future.

Cherimoya, nice one, but you could also say that is one of the upsides of this diet! I  am quite fair and most of the hair on my body is vellus (short, fine, light-coloured, almost invisible) rather than terminal (thick, long, darker). I don't have enough growth to have a proper beard, and I'm twenty seven years old. Have there been many cases of significant increase in terminal hair resulting from a raw paleo diet?

Tyler, I agree there is some preparation. Chopping up tough meats, shelling nuts, extracting marrow from bones, peeling fruits, peeling veggies, opening oysters, etc. are tasks we regularly must do. But by following this diet we are not committing ourselves to processing or preparing food beyond the minimum necessary to make it more convenient to get it into our mouths. I generally take an Instincto approach to food preparation.

There is a farmers market in Leeds city centre every second Sunday. On other Sundays the market is held a bit out of town and difficult for me to get to. The farmers market here provides a good source of grass-fed beef, pork, lamb and chicken, including organs. But other staples of the diet like fish, shellfish, raw nuts, raw honey, mutton, wild game meat, suet, bone marrow and organic fruit are not available at the markets, and sometimes even organic eggs and vegetables are nowhere to be seen. I get those things online but each supplier only does one or two of the items I'm looking for so I end up making many small orders and delivery is expensive. I'm never home during the day, so I usually have to collect from the depot which is miles out of town. I don't have much storage space and I prefer not to freeze, so it is a daily struggle to keep my supplies in stock.

High meat is one aspect of the diet I've not yet explored. I have eaten stuff that was sitting in the fridge for weeks but that's a bit different. I'm doing fine without the high meat but wouldn't mind trying. I've got some mason jars: do I just chop up the meat, place in the jar, cover and let sit in the fridge for several months, taking off the lid every week or so to air out the meat? Is there any more to it? Will it stink out my apartment?

One should air the meat every 2 or 3 days or so. It will stink out your appartment, unless you have a garden where you can air it properly.

Incidentally, I am  a lot less against the consumption of prefrozen meats. I agree that I prefer them to be sold chilled rather than prefrozen, but, unlike others, I am less affected by prefrozen meats.

I'm sure you'd see some extra hair growth if you ate a lot of foods that contain testosterone, like testicles, and lots of fats, but no, I'm not aware of any real changes as far as that goes.  I've grown more back and chest hair over the last few years, but I think that's just normal for a man of my age.

The only interest in raw paleo diet comes from sick people who have tried everything else but nothing has worked for them.

My driver is on raw now.  He's had terrible kidney pain the past week and no success with herbs or bone setters.  I suggested  a fast of coconuts and raw eggs.  His pain subsided the past 2 days.  So he's continuing.

There seems to be huge number of new members joining the forum. When I joined back in September I counted about 1000 members, there are now almost 3,600 listed.  That means over two thirds of the members have joined in the last six months. And how many more must be viewing the forum but not registering? Of course, the vast majority of members do not post anything, not even an introduction, so we don't really know whether they even eat RPD, but at least they appear to open to it.

A lot of them are spammers, probably 90%.

That's still ~360 non-spammers!  It's probably true that most of them won't try the diet, let alone switch over, but that's still people funneling in and awareness raising, which is never a bad thing for a currently taboo subject.

FWIW, I'm thinking about raw with only a few small health problems (a bit overweight, what I think is probably some mild eczema, and some mild food allergies).

I'd say we have a fair number of lurkers, who are probably trying the diet, but not ever posting about it.  Not everyone feels comfortable posting online.

Judging from past statistics, only 2-3% of the members of any forum post regularly with another 37% posting only very rarely, and the rest never posting at all.

Yes, that's pretty typical for most forums. People are afraid the trolls and jerks will insult/belittle them, or they're afraid that someone will get angry at them and try to find them IRL.  They also often don't want people they know IRL to find out that they're posting on a particular forum.

On top of that are the people who just don't feel like they have anything that's worth contributing, and probably the people who feel like they're not "good enough" to post if they aren't doing an (almost) all raw paleo diet.  Agreed with all the reasons above though, especially on something that's "controversial" like this.

No health changes because I'm not raw paleo.  As interested as I am, the logistics of it are a little rough.  The big things preventing me are 1) living with my gf, and 2) the big jump in - I tried raw beef and have no problem with it... it tastes good, so my next step would probably be to place a fairly large order to make it cost effective.  #2 isn't so big of a deal.

#1 is pretty much what's stopping me.  This is a pretty radical change in diet that I'm proposing and she isn't much of a researcher.  She reacted better than I expected about it all (tried a little bit when I did tartare), but me wanting to go ~80%+ raw paleo all the sudden is a much bigger switch than just trying raw beef once.  She's also wanted to lose weight for a while, and other things, but doesn't feel like she could really eat all that raw meat.

She had mentioned recently that she wanted to go on a diet, and I thought it would turn out to be the perfect opportunity for me to try this way of eating.  Instead it turned out that she had wanted me to go on the diet with her, and that she didn't really feel like she could do it herself.  If I wasn't eating meals with her and such, she probably just wouldn't be eating when she should.  Maybe I'll make a deal to help prepare her meals and stuff or something.  I don't know yet.

Anyway, that's enough of my excuses and sad songs for now.  Long story short, I haven't given up, I'm still working on it, so we'll see what happens.  I'll certainly let you guys know if I manage to make the big order and give it a full shot.

Oh, and the whole "you have to do what is best for you" argument doesn't really play as well on me.  There are and always will be things that are more important to me than perfect physical health.

p.s. sorry for the thread takeover!
