Galangal / Langkawas Discussions

Let's talk about a kind of ginger / herb / root crop called Langkawas / Galangal.

Whatever experience you have with it.

I’ve been buying a kind of ginger twice in the wet market so far, it is called “langkawas” or “galangal” depending on the province you come from. I bought it because I am in a ginger discovery kick. Tasting the different kinds of ginger. With the new nannies in the home and my sister in law who also came from the province, they all said in concert that “langkawas” or “galangal” is their traditional cure for an-an / tinea flava fungal infections!

More about this http://theepicentre.com/spice/galangal/

A kind of vinegar called Sinamak is made with Langkawas http://www.viajenegrense.info/2011/09/ang-sinamak.html

Do you eat this as is?  Just suck on it? Make dried chips?

Make into tea?  Add into soups? (for those who cook)

I think I've seen that strange looking ginger in the store that I shop in that imports some oddities from around the world. Does it grow and taste like regular ginger? Do you use it like regular ginger? I am trying to grow my own ginger now. It was easy in the tropics but not so easy here. It's such a beautiful plant. Now I'm going to have to buy some of that funny looking root and try not only to eat it but grow it!

Anti-fungal herbs are always nice to have around. :D
