Health considerations aside, that's pretty stupid. Tomatoes are not fully ripe until they are soft. This is something most people don't understand. They want tomatoes that are firm and then they complain that they don't enjoy the taste. Well of course you don't, because there's nothing in there to taste when they're firm.
