Life used to be great even a few 100s of years ago. OK, so average lifespan was shorter due to disease etc., but people worked far fewer hours per week in those days, they paid far less income-tax(as I recall  just 1 or 2% to the State/Monarch, and 10% to the Church, annually), so they had it better in many ways...
