Hey RawZi,

I've never seen that website.  Looks interesting!  Thanks for the link.  Is that RawStrength you?

You certainly sell the nutritional value of duck eggs to me.  I can source them locally here in the UK quite easily and they're not greatly more expensive than ordinary organic/free-range chicken eggs fortunately.  A brief google search reveals that ducks seem to be fed similar dry compound feeds to chickens in the UK which is disappointing.  If only they lived on what I assume is their natural diet - fish!  I would expect that to be one nutritious egg!

Goodsamaritan - those duck eggs are fed no feed but live entirely from foraging?!  Perfect!  If only I could get those here in the UK!  I must say, however, those ducks looks rather overcrowded in their pen.  That can't be great for their health or welfare.

when I was in Bali the last time I was excited to find duck eggs, but opted not to for most of the herds of ducks there are used to work the rice paddies.  I found out that Bali now uses extensive chemical means when growing rice.   Maybe not so where you get yours?

hi rawzi, can you tell me where i can take my chickens to mate some handsome roosters once a month to make fertile eggs? i will have some chicken soon in my new house in westchester, ny. in bangladesh, all natural fertile duck eggs (free range ducks) are so so cheap. only poor eat them. i ask my uncle to get duck eggs from the wet market next to his home. he told me that entire village will talk if they see him buying duck eggs. very strange culture!! in us, there's no access to get and back home, people will talk... god knows where to go to live peacefully!!

They just sleep in the pen.  Every day they are out with the duck herder.

The ducks forage in the mountains.

Only during harvest time do the ducks forage in the rice fields that use no chemicals.

This is Palawan, one of the last frontiers.

You're blessed goodsamaritan with living in a place so abundant with wonderful foods - the fruits, coconuts, fish, eggs....  I hope it remains the last frontier for many years!  Enjoy your environment and all that it offers you.

I don't live in Palawan, those ducks live in Palawan.

We live in the biggest metropolis in the Philippines, complete with pollution and traffic.  But since this is the biggest metropolis, we have the biggest markets too.

Oh?!  In that case, forget what I said!   :D  Still, at least you have the markets and access to those wonderful foods.

Not that bad a place to find raw foods.
You've got Whole Foods in White Plains and a Trader Joes in Scarsdale. You aren't in the country per se but it's not a bad drive to some of the more rural farmer's markets or even farms.
You can also go just the same distance in the other direction and shop around all of the ethnic districts in NYC (including Chinatown mentioned in another thread). My brother lives in Queens (I think) part of the week and he's always talking about the fresh meats (and other foods) for sale in the little out of the way areas. A lot of goat for some reason. :)

I really liked this study. It is rather old so there is a big chance that the experiments were done with fertilized eggs.

THE DIGESTIBILITY AND UTILIZATION OF EGG PROTEINS.
SUMMARY
Raw egg-white is found to be a decidedly indigestible substance. It may cause diarrhea in dogs, rats, rabbits, and man when ingested in any large quantity. Its utilization by the body is poor since it is used only to the extent of 50 to 70 per cent. Subjects can acquire a certain tolerance for the native protein after ingesting it for several days so that it no longer causes diarrhea and is somewhat better utilized.

The whites of the hen’s egg and duck’s egg act alike in causing diarrhea and in being poorly utilized.

Egg-yolk either raw or cooked is excellently utilized. It sometimes causes digestive disturbances in dogs, apparently because of its high fat content.

It's extremely unlikely that the eggs were fertilised as the study would not have required any roosters/males for the egg-laying in those presumably isolated laboratory conditions, so that only hens would have been used. Scientists are after all as practical as anyone else.

In this study, dogs were fed (pg 3):
raw egg white
raw egg white + milk
raw egg white + cracker meal + lard
raw egg white + cracker meal + lard, flavoured with beef extract

Near the end (pg 24), they also mention feeding egg yolk + cracker dust + lard.

These all caused various digestive problems.

How about feeding the dogs WHOLE RAW EGGS? I bet they'd digest just fine.

Some details about instinctive consumption of eggs:

The eggs used in the records I talk about in my books (more than 40 egg yolks in a meal, etc..) were produced in chicken houses where there were enough cocks, so were they fertilized.

The instinctive stop doesn’t seem to be different with unfertilized eggs (checked with very precise criteria like inflammatory regulation).

Quality of poultry feed is essential: the eggs of free ranging chickens in a meadow with other animals are much more tasty (their flavor reminiscents of wild bird eggs, because the hens consume more insects. If they only receive grain, their eggs are particularly bland. The neatness of instinctive stop is in proportion to the flavor’s intensity (though gastric signals should also be considered).

Large quantities consumed very occasionally do not overload the body nor its digestive capacity, which is easily verified by various criteria (quality of digestion, absence of farts, well-being, unlocks of instinctive calls for other foodstuff, longer term health results...).

These quantities appear excessive only in relation to dietary beliefs, but these beliefs don’t take into account the individual’s current needs, they are based only on average needs. There is therefore no basis to assert that occasional large rations would prove any instinctive malfunction: they are instead evidence of profound disturbances, due to earlier intakes of unnatural food, such as large deficiencies in lecithin or other disorders that require exceptional amouts of specific nutrients. That's why I call such phenomena "therapeutic amounts". Only our alimentary instinct can help recognize such type of needs - as they are sometimes seen in pregnant women.

All the research done on the assimilation of egg’s white don’t take into account  neither  the instinct nor the current individual needs. However, these needs modulate the secretion of digestive enzymes, so that we can not conclude that the egg’s white, inassimilable  under usual (cooked) conditions, should also be in the conditions defined by the instincto. This point deserves further research.

I don't really enjoy eating raw egg whites(cooked seem fine - though I wouldn't do that after learning about this raw diet). I'd like to be able to only eat the yolks but it seems like such a waste to throw away the whites... they usually comprise about 70% of the whole egg and quality eggs aren't cheap! - in my area they are around $4/5 per dozen.

If you need egg’s white, it would be very palatable to you.

If the raw white seems tasteless, you do not need it. Ingesting it would therefore do no good, only disturb your digestion. Better put it in the compost where it will hurt no one.

I ate a few raw unfertilized chicken eggs last week before a Crossfit workout and I felt really good, euphoric even.

I'm wondering if instead of concerning ourselves of the avidin levels in the white, why not just eat a higher ratio of yolk to white, say two whole eggs and an additional two yolks?

Chris Masterjohn has written interesting article that suggests that eating raw egg whites may be healthful for some people, potentially boosting glutathione levels:

Egg whites can be used as hair shampoo. They are supposed to keep one's hair in its natural color and may even turn the greying hair back to its natural color when used long-term (one year plus).
