Workout like a CHAMP

So I thought I was doing pretty good. Adding 300 push-ups & 500 sit-ups several days a week to my workouts, and getting some bag work back in. Been running stairs for a while, too (between 300 and 1000 per workout).

Then I stumbled on Mike Tyson's workout back when he was on top of the world:

3 mile run. Then rest & eat.

10 rounds sparring then 1 hour bag work.

Rest & eat.

500-600 push-ups, 500-600 dips, 1000-2000 sit-ups, 500 shrugs (w/ 65lbs/30kg).

More ring/bag work (speed bag, focus mits, footwork drills, etc)...60 minutes. 10 minutes neck work.

Rest & eat.

30-60 minutes exercise bike.


Ouch.

That's not all he did right? I don't see anything there for legs aside from running, I would think something like squats or lunges would be more important for punching power than dips or push ups.

I'm starting up a routine again after taking a month off, and I'm going to start slow. I've found that for my purposes (liking the way I look, being in good enough shape to keep up with guys at the bjj gym, etc) I don't need to do much. Eating a low carb raw paleo diet keeps me thin whether I work out or not, and I don't have to kill myself every day in the gym like I used to like to do. In fact I wonder whether or not I would have had better results even back then doing a little less. Very often I'll start getting more and more intense in my workouts and before you know it I'm burned out and take a month off, like this time.

A while back a friend who I used to lift with at the gym said when he was younger he found this comic thing that was "Batman's Workout." It was crazy stuff kind of like the Mike Tyson thing and just motivated him I guess. Batman would need a hell of a workout, eh?

Kyle - I don't think Iron Mike did anything specific for legs (like weighted squats) simply because the "ring work" portion in boxing often includes hand drills, rope work, footwork drills, etc. The footwork drills, back when I was a kid, included "fighter squats" to ensure proper motion along with slipping. Not just your head moves when you slip punches - your body, via lateral movement, moves too, and the legs provide all the meaningful motion (up & down as well as front-back, side-to-side).

Keep us posted on your progress!

I looked up "batman workout" and got a bunch of stuff on Christian Bale when he was training for the Batman role. Lots of plyometrics and heavy resistance to put on the pounds - he had only 6 months after finishing "The Mechanic" (he starved down to 121 pounds [losing over 60 from his normal weight]) to be ready for "Batman" (he gained, in that 6 months, over 100 pounds of muscle...from 121 to 230 - THEN had to cut down to 190 because the director said he was too big!).

ThVery often I'll start getting more and more intense in my workouts and before you know it I'm burned out and take a month off, like this time.

Maybe you're not getting in enough calories to fuel your workouts or recover from them. Since you're 0-low carbs. You're muscle needs glucose after a workout. From my understanding protein can have an insulin effect in your body. At a different pace compared to carbs.

When I start training for a competition or fight I have a tendency to get in more calories. All from clean sources of course. My weight drops, I get stronger & my metabolism is slightly faster as I increase workout intensity.

What do you eat to increase your caloric intake, DeadRamones?

I compete in amateur MMA & used to compete in judo/grappling tournaments. I don't really follow a paleo or all raw meat diet. I joined this site for info on consuming raw meat. I do try to include as much raw food as possible.

The only supplements I take are fishoil caps, whey protein, & BCAA. I only take them cause the price per serving is a good way for me to include extra protein while sticking to a food budget. Organic & grass-fed isn't cheap around my side.

A typical day while dieting to make weight goes like this

Breakfast: 1 Banana or 1tbs raw honey,5 whole raw eggs, sometimes 1-3tbs yogurt for taste
Mid snack: bunch of dried berries & nuts, or 2oz raw cheese
Lunch: 6oz meat cooked or raw, whatever mix veg I have
afternoon or during workouts: 1 bananas & 2tbsp BCAA in water
afterworkout: 1banana or tbs raw honey & 1scoop protein (for recovery)
Dinner:5-6oz of raw beef & some sauerkraut or kimichi


As you can tell I eat alot of banana's. I feel that the balance of fructose,fiber & glucose helps fuel my workouts & help speeds up my recovery after training. When I'm not training for a fight I'll normally eat about 1/3less of the foods that I posted.

What sort of workouts are you doing when training AND when not training for a fight?

SkinnyDevil, are you on GITMR? I could of sworn I saw the same Avatar.

3x a week I do the 5-3-1 lifting routine. Just Deadlifts,front squats,weighted pullups & bench

Monday-Thursday: 1.5 hour of Bjj followed by 1.5 hour of muay thai.These classes are really tough. Lots of live drilling,sparring & rolling. That's why I'll sip 2tbsp of BCAA in water & chip away at a banana. It's normal for me to lose about 6lbs just from sweating.

Sundays-MMA(allot of shark tank,king of the mountain & sparring drills)

When I have a fight coming up, which is normally 5-4 weeks away. I keep the same workout. Except I'll increase the intensity, try not to focus to much on new moves, just refining the ones I already know,work allot of timing,angles & feeling. Also I cut out the weight lifting 2weeks before fighting.

Hope that helps give you an idea.

DR - yes, I have a profile at GITMR. Not there often. Not many meat eaters and many of the vegans get a bit hostile about meat (hahaha!).

Thanx for the info regarding your workout & diet.

Got any of those fights on video?

Nice fight. Thanx for sharing.

I missed what the other guy did that caused a problem in the 3rd round. Did his kick reach your throat or was it something else?

I've been meaning to get a VHS to DVD converter (or simply a VHS to digital converter, really). Once I do, I'll up-load some fights from way back that I had. None of them sanctioned - it was still only quasi-legal then! I have a pretty good tape of a fight I lost in GA and a couple of "ronin" bouts I won. I figure it's all good because we didn't get hauled off to jail (hahaha!).

I like most of the post on GITMR ,but yea way to much vegan dogma for my taste. At the least there are some cute hippie chicks that make up for it.

I train out of AMA in Whippany. Haven't fought for New Breed, only Asylum. Their shows are allot closer to me lol. What team are you in?

It's called "Team Balance." My bjj instructor is John Hassett, he got gold in the Pan Ams at black belt a few times. Right now we have two guys fighting in New Breed regularly. What kind of venues do you have where you are? Atlantic City seems to me to be the only suitable venue around here, since casinos are preferred prize fight venues.

ADDENDUM:

I feel GREAT!

2 days off (Sat & Sun) and a great workout Monday. Today was a "cardio" day and included running stairs (800+ up and 800+ down) as well as 800 sit-ups.

Now....steak or oysters?
