Unavailable Grass-fed Meat
« on: January 25, 2010, 02:23:51 am »
I live in the Netherlands and can't get hold of grass-fed meat. :(
All animals are fed with grains. I can't eat those meats, because off my psoriasis.
What should I do ? Should i buy mailorder meat ?

Do you mean that grainfed meat causes you psoriasis ?

What about game, fish, seafood, eggs ?

You have a problem. Last I checked the Netherlands and Belgium had an extremely high population density, and therefore high food prices, and poor choices. Plus, ordering raw grassfed meat from abroad may prove difficult unless you can persuade German etc.farms to look the other way(if they're close to the Dutch border). Other than the last option, do try to obtain raw wild game(it's far superior to raw grassfed meats). Obviously depend on wildcaught seafood to some extent(I myself do so as I find that superior health is acheived with at least some portion of raw wild seafood)

*Just did some googling online and there does indeed seem to be some sort of a grassfed meat industry in the Netherlands:-

"•The fat from cattle raised on green grass has much higher concentrations of vitamin K2. Studies of K2 have suggested it is extremely potent for lowering arterial calcifications, which in turn lowers the risk of heart disease. The Rotterdam Study, which prospectively followed just over 4,600 men aged 55 or older in the Netherlands, showed that the highest intake of vitamin K2 was associated with a 52 percent lower risk of severe aortic calcification, a 41 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), a 51 percent lower risk of CHD mortality, and a 26 percent lower risk of total mortality. " taken from:-

Other options include searching for an organic/grassfed meat association in the Netherlands etc.  In short, whenever I hear newbies claim shortages of high-quality raw foods such as grassfed meats I'm generally highly sceptical of such claims as I felt the same way when I was in London, UK at the start of this diet, and, because of strenuous effort on my part re googling grassfed farms, visiting farmers' markets/health-stores/organic butchers etc at least once a week or more, I was able to find numerous excellent sources of high quality.

Tyler, thanks for your reply. I will keep on looking for the right meats.
First of all, what is: "raw wild game" ?
I already visited health-stores and organic butchers and tried there raw meat.
Organic meat in Holland is also grain-fed :(

Look for farmer markets & farms, forget the butchers or stores

Theres also an international directory for grass fed farms, just google grass fed unpasteurised milk

Raw wild game is meat/organs from wild animals such as wild deer, wild hare, wild boar etc.

I think you're giving up too soon. Given that link I gave it's clear that grassfed meat does exist in Holland to some degree. There may be a Dutch grassfed meat website somewhere, plus some farms provide grassfed meat but can't afford to go organic(you'd have to phone multiple farms and ask them what they feed their animals).

Nielsz! Where do you stay? We are Dutch, but like you said, we also have been unable to find grass fed meat in the Netherlands. Did you find a poacher (stroper)  ;)

Diana, where do you live ?

I live in Warmenhuizen. That's near Alkmaar and Schagen.
Here are some links if you are looking for 100% grass-fed meat:

Vaak is grasgevoerd niet helemaal grasgevoerd en worden de beesten na een levenlang (kuil)gras vlak voor de slacht nog een week of zes op granen en mais gezet om wat extra aan te komen. Van de mooie verhouding tussen omega-3 en omega-6 in het vlees blijft niet zoveel meer over...

Altijd even expliciet navragen dus!

Why not go the whole hog and start a Dutch version of rawpaleoforum? We already have a French forum and it would be great to have more RPD forums for other languages.

Nielsz, thanks for the links! I will look into it. A good idea to look for dear!

We are actually out of the country for most of the year, but we do spend some time there every year. We are from Elst (Utrecht), right on the edge of the woods. A could opportunity to do some hunting  ;) if that was allowed. Paleo times are a thing of the past. There used to be a poacher nearby our home, that is why I thought of that.

I am compiling one. Four addresses from my site were already quoted by you.

Still looking for input though... Did you find some more resources?

When I'll find more I'll post!
