Eating raw eyeballs?
« on: March 23, 2010, 08:39:01 am »
I hear eating raw eyeballs in some cultures is considered a delicacy.  Such as the Eskimos.  Does anyone know what kind of unique nutrients would be in them?

I am thinking of telling my butcher all buy the eyeballs of all her animals seeing as no one El's probably buys em so shed be happy to get a price for them.  Is there any eyeballs from any animal that are dangerous to eat?

I was thinking of eating eyeballs from the fallowing animals Cow, Lamb, salmon, fish, is there anything I should be warned about?

Also I would love to hear about experiences from anyone El's on here who has eaten eyeballs.

I eat raw eyes of fish.
They are very good.
I usually do this with small fish that are fresh.

My family is from Italy and Greece... the ones that immigrated here eat everything!, while the american-born are grossed out.  I clearly remember eyeballs (squid) being eaten.

When I've got an opportunity to eat the eyeballs I eat them.
They've got a lot of lutein.
The lamb ones are really tasty -

Thank you for that beautifull and taste looking picture Hannabil!!

I will start of with lamb ones and salmon ones then, My butcher will probably be able to to lamb and I have a Friend who's sold me wild caught salmon heads at the seafood market for a few weeks now I just haven't been eating the eyes.

So Lutein and vitamin A, all do a bit of research see if I can find anything El's interesting in there.

I'd definitely eat up some squid eyeballs too why not you only live once.

Next step after this, Bull Testicles!! ;D

Is that sold anywhere at all these days in the USA?  Have any of you seen it sold?  While traveling I saw an old man buying raw sheep-heads (with eyeballs) from the meat section in a Supermarket.  He told me his grandchildren love it.  I want that so much.  I heard face meat is sweet too.  Is it difficult to acquire legally in the USA?

Then to balance things, post pictures of the raw fruits and raw vegetables you eat as well.

In Canada, I've bought lamb and goat heads that look like this, directly from farms. If you order a whole goat or lamb, ask the farmer/butcher to save the head. One time, the butcher was kind enough to save the heads of all the animals he butchered that day, and I got 7 heads. I think that beef heads are illegal, though.

In my opinion, the brains and eyeballs are the best parts. There's also two small glands which have a strong taste, I'm not sure what they are.

Strong taste as in "bad" tasting?  Pineal?  Pituitary?  Where exactly in the head are they?

I'm not sure what's best.  I chewed fish eyes.  The have like a hard crunchy shell in them, then when burst, sweet liquid-like stuff squirts out like biting a cherry tomato.

I would say it's ink-like liquid, which is quite toothsome.

Ink sounds good.  There are no seeds in the eye, and it's not tangy like a tomato, but it is as sweet.

Damn...

I've been eating raw meat and raw organs for a bit over a year now... but those pictures make me feel a bit funny...

Like it triggers something in me that says eating meat is wrong or something... I suppose I'm not used to being confronted with a chopped off skinned head of the animal with the eye ball looking up at me like that.  I just get my meat nicely filleted in a bag.

It also looks like the animal is crying a tear of blood.

It's a cultural thing.  It may not be common in your markets but it is common in my markets in my country.
We've got heads of goats and pigs in our everyday wet markets like that.

Buying a whole duck means the head is included.

Buying fish or shrimp includes the whole head.

Serving fish and shrimp you must serve the heads or else the customer will think the cooks and waiters ate the heads.

My mom always gave me the head of the milkfish because she said that was the most nutritious part.  My kids are always asking for fish eyes (cooked though).

That reminds me.  I think we (children) ate salmon heads (pretty much raw) when I was a small child even though the plain flesh was available to us (kids) without all that oily mess, and my parents encouraged us to do as we liked/chose there.  Funny, I had absolutely no memory of that ... yeah, but I think so.  Our family had no dogs or cats then, so it was definitely us.  I don't remember my parents eating the heads, only the plain flesh.

What's a milkfish?  I've never eaten a cooked eye.  What were eyes like cooked?

Milkfish / Bangus.  If salmon is the common farmed fish in Norway, Bangus is the common farmed fish in the Philippines.

I'm not into eating bangus since I went paleo, since this is not a paleo fish.

The taste of raw small fish eyes tastes pretty much the same as cooked bangus fish eyes.

Cooked milkfish head "paksiw" style.
This is a home cooked meal.
