the manned wolf, an omnivorous canine
« on: May 11, 2010, 05:22:32 pm »
I just found about this strange and little known wild wolf from South America called the manned wolf. What is very interesting is that it is an omnivorous canine and vegetable matter, especially fruits and tubers, account for more than 50% of his diet, acording to some authors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maned_wolf

It is fascinating that within the canine family, there is a species that has very different diet from the rest of the family members. This example raises several questions about trying to determine what our natural diet might be.

Well, canines are able to live off vegetable matter, indeed there are some vegans who feed their dogs on vegetarian diets. Wouldn;t work on cats, I should think, though, as they are more carnivorous-leaning.

Captive Maned Wolves were traditionally fed meat-heavy diets and developed bladder stones.

This might be interesting for the low or zero carbers...

Looks kind of like a fox. I think foxes even in Wisconsin are omnivorous.

I've seen Arctic foxes eat plastic, and neolithic man eat wheat.

Actually, I've seen dogs eat blackberries right off the vine.  Coyotes will eat tomatoes and other fruit off the vine, including papaya.
