Is melanoma from the sun BULLSHIT?
« on: August 12, 2010, 03:14:54 am »
With the last topic about sunning nude ant testosterone, I was thinking more and more about UV and the sun. I was thinkin since the media, government agencies, medical community, and corporations lie to us so much, maybe this is a lie to. I always wonder do people really get problems from "too much" sun. It almost seems stupid. I mean, it does seem unnatural to be indoors all winter, to be white as paper, then all of the sudden go out in the sun and get burnt. Maybe that has some truth in those cases. But if I was out in the sun everyday, my body would adapt with tanning, then it seems that I would'nt have a problem. It seems quite possible that on the flipside, suntan lotion is actually giving people skin cancer more than anything else, and the etiology of melanoma could be a red herring. Thanks for that saying Tyler.

Hi Pioneer

I think you're 100% right about the suntan lotion and the media government bullshit - though there does seem to be a bit of movement, at least in the UK, back to some 'safe' sun exposure for vitamin d production. From what I've read the key is balanced exposure to both UVA and UVB - UVA is the one that causes pigmentation change and potentially burning if you overdo it, while UVB mitigates against this. Trouble is, UVB is easily blocked / scattered so, for example, working behind glass (eg offices, cars etc.) tends to block the UVB so you just get UVA. Also, time of day affects exposure - UVB gets blocked / scattered by atmospheric pollution during morning and evening when the sun is low in the sky - ideal time is middle of the day as the sun is more overhead and direct. That said, I think there is still some danger of melanoma if you get repeatedly burnt - that's why there's variations in skin tone depending on where in the world you're from genetically - if there's more sun you have darker skin so you don't absorb so much so easily, further from the equator and you have paler skin because you'd typically get a lot less exposure. I think the main thing is to listen to your body and tan over time - if it feels uncomfortable, find some shade - but definitely get some sun too.

People who evolved in northern latitudes lost the melanin in their skin and turned lighter in color as an adaption to less sun exposure. The body needs sunlight to produce growth stimulating hormones such as vitamin D. The less melanin in the skin the more sun rays are able to penetrate the skin and stimulate the production of these vital hormones. The more sun you are exposed too the more melon in builds in the skin, as a restrictive agent that keeps you from getting sun poisoning.

Skin cancer was never an issue in human history, even in white farm folk who worked under the sun all day.
As soon as these tanning lotions and sunscreens started being pushed on people, cancer rates exploded.

I love the sun,but sunburns are not fun.How do you avoid sunburn without sunblock? I used to play tennis in Los Angeles quite a bit.Without sunblock I would have turn into a lobster 8)

I'm not selling on the idea of sunblock.I'd just like to know the alternatives for people who need to be out in the sun for longer periods. Some people can't just go in&out of the shade.

That is exactly what I thought. Good eye sabertooth. I saw this vid a few months back and was like Hmmm.... Maybe skin cancer from the sun is bullshit. Turns out sun lotion gives you cancer faster than any other topical. I cant stress enough that putting things on your skin is a hugely underlooked topic. However, it actually should be addressed under more caution than pills, unless of course the pills are methylated (which causes liver damage). Its the same reason they are using topical testosterone rather than pills and injection. I read that 90% of what is on your skin gets absorbed whereas about 15-20% of a substance in a pill actually makes it to your bloodstream, unless it is methylated. However methylation causes liver problems much like excess alcohol consumption. So actually if any of you take supplements, it might be an even better idea to get it topical. Ive been thinking about topical vitamin d with a dmso solution to rub on my balls and increase testosterone. Tell me what you guys think of that.

I sent this video to my whole family, as they still believe that they can get cancer from the sun, so at least they can purchase a "safe" sunscreen.

by the way, I also read that statins decrease melanin. Just another dumb ass idea for profit over people without any concern of others.

Sunblock is a total scam.
I forbid those chemicals on my family.
We have virgin coconut oil when necessary.
And we parents tell our kids to not go under the sun from 10am to 3pm. (in manila)

What about "natural " sunblock? with Aloe Vera? What's wrong with that?

Check it out: http://www.ehow.com/how_5126755_make-safe-natural-sunblock.html

Or, some of these look ok:   http://www.aviva.ca/shop/product_sections.asp?catid=233

I've tried

-No sunsreen plus RPD diet

-Coconut oil plus RPD diet

-Suet plus RPD diet, this is very thick and needs to be a hot day for suet to melt, just rub on face or warm up on pan.

-Marrow plus RPD diet

I want to try marrow/beeswax and zinc oxide.

wodgina, how did the suet and marrow work for you?  What do you expect of beeswax?

I think I'll try raw grassfed butter.

worked well, has to be a hot day for suet though. I wouldn't spend all day out the sun with just marrow/suet especially Australia/New Zealand but for a couple of hours it's great.

I only used it on my face, my body was sunscreen free.

I'm buying some (non nano) zinc oxide and I'm going to experiment in making zinc barrier suncreen. I expect the beeswax to make it stickier IDK

A good 'sunscreen' is coconut oil.

I also discovered it's good after you burn as well. My skin still pealed after a while, but at least it did not hurt.

By the way, do you know any natural treatment for age spots caused by sun exposure?

I got a few on the back after several serious burns and I wonder if yanking them with a knife works.

Eat aloe vera, smear it on your skin. It is good news topically and internally.

I remember when I was learning Ayurveda, one segment was on herbs, etc. and remember going over all the items and I made up a chart to help me categorize them and I noticed that one of the few things that are good for every body type and for a number of different issues was Aloe Vera.

It's like a major healer. It is manna for skin disorders, hemorrhoids, cuts, burns, you name it.

So I asked the Vaidya (professional degreed Ayur. Doc) if it was really so, that it was good for everybody to which he said yes. So I asked if it was good to take regularly. He said eat when you want. So I went to the health food store and got some in a bottle. It was fresh organic you name it certified by God and the 12 disciples  ;) but it was so loaded with ascorbic acid it was impossible to drink. So I kept looking around and one day I was in Whole Foods and I asked the guy what they had in AV. He started to explain that it was impossible to keep it fresh without pasteurizing and adding ascorbic acid, when a guy there who heard the conversation said to me "hey just lop off a leaf and eat it." I said but what about the spines? He said "Just chew em up".

So now I have four flower pots on my desk and just lop off a leaf whenever the spirit hits me.

Wally World or any florist has the plants and they grow like crazy and they taste much better than the bottled crap.
In the testosterone thread I relate how since I started the raw diet, spending a lot of time in the sun and sungazing, the spots on my skin have started to disappear, sometime coming off by just scratching them. Bumps have been coming off also. This is a family tradition and as they get older my relatives have been having then surgically removed, as they eventually become melanoma.
Cheers

Problem is that the science that was used to show the link between sun exposure and melanoma has been called into question as frequently happens, after experiments or studies sit around for awhile and someone else devises an experiment that shows contrary. I personally believe that it is diet. Excessive exposure to the sun might exacerbate it, but it is not the root cause. (I believe)

Its kinda gross but Ia Mexican I work with claims that you can massage egg yoke into you skin as a treatment for dry skin and sunburn, which seemed to me absurd at first

But if you study the role of cholesterol in creating melanin and vitamin D as well as other helpfull hormones, it seems feasible.

He also says that you can use lemon rind for underarm deodorant, and tells my stories about his cousin who drinks blood and is built like a beast.(seems credible}

Maybee we should use egg yoke for paleo sunscreen

Interesting Sabertooth!

The lemon thing makes perfect sense as the juice would tend to kill the bacteria that are responsible for odor.

In Ayurveda sesame oil is considered the best of the light oils for a variety of anti bacterial, fungal etc properties and significantly as a sunscreen.

The blood thing makes sense as the Masai were quite large as in healthy and blood was a part of their diet. Blood straight from a live animal.

Yeah, this is what we do in the entire household.  Our lemons are called calamansi.

Ayurveda suggests that taking a knife to anything is a bad idea or at least the hotel of last resort.
Personally I use either Aloe Vera (normally on problems) or more usually a pitta pacifying oil mixed with olive oil as a regular AM body massage.
