Hello To All-

Just signed up, wanted to see if my post would post!  99% raw for 15 years, I tried raw vegan in the beginning for a couple of years, it never really worked.  100% raw...couldn't and wouldn't eat anything not raw for the past few years!   Married my wife 5 years ago, she's mostly raw, our kids, 4 yrs., 3, 17 months...mostly raw, they eat raw bison, beef, elk, chicken or turkey, and fish, any of the three of them will drink 1/2 dozen eggs!  Raw cheese too.  We don't/can't force them to eat, they eat what they want within the diet.  Raw Fruit and veggies come and go for all of us.  Steamed veggies for the kids sometimes.  All 5 of us do well with the diet, my kids get sick once in awhile, but rarely does sickness change their mood or energy levels.  I water fast regularly, the kids will also choose not to each much once in awhile for days or sometimes weeks at a time.  Good to find the forum!

What was your inspiration to eat raw?

I was 25 years old, and diagnosed by the "best" doctors with things that I was regularly told could not be cured!  I have always been extremely athletic, and little by little couldn't participate in sports that I enjoyed.  I had been traveling in the middle east for over a year, eating mostly vegetarian foods, and a lot of raw fruit and veggies.  My health didn't really improve but it didn't get worse.  Upon returning to the States I started following a raw vegan diet.  It cured my ailments initially, but after a year or two I had cravings for cookies and chips and I ate all the time.  First experience with raw meat was great.  Knife and fork, cut a piece, ate, put knife and fork down, picked up the steak (beef), and tore into the meat.  It was awesome!  Over the years I have made many modifications to my diet and arrived at something that really works for me, I am not following any one doctrine, but raw animal foods are probably 60-70% of my diet most of the time.  Now the list of reasons to remain raw is endless!

Thanks for asking, I am interested in answering any questions that I can!  I have had a lot of failures with my diet, which in the end led me to a successful diet that brings me what I need.

I follow a (raw, omnivorous) version of the palaeolithic diet(low-carbish). I'm usually 99% raw, food-wise, in any 1 year. I have been rawpalaeo since february 2002, and I was on the raw primal Diet for 6 months before that.

Wow!!!  That's pretty cool!  What kind of diet do you follow now?  How has it varied over the years in what you eat, and how much you eat?  Do you implement water fasting?  That's really rawsome!

How much do you sleep every night?  What inspires you to continue on your raw path?  Seems like your "moving and groving" with the changes you sense...

What do you do for carbs for children?
Do your children need more carbohydrates than the adults?

I’ve eaten "instincto"  ever since reading the book of GCB.

In the beginning I ate a lot of fish but now I’m more inclined towards meat (wild boar, venison, deer, chamois, grass fed lamb, horse, beef, etc.) and shellfish (oysters, mussels, clams, jackknife clams, etc). I’ve always eaten as many suitable eggs I could get. Lots of fruits, vegetables and various nuts as well. I’m very found of durian, jackfruit and cempedak. A little bit of honey sometimes. Dates and sugar cane also. In one word: anything raw and typically paleo.

Water fasting, I did at the time when I ate cooked food and got ill, but never more than 48 hours. Since I eat raw I haven’t fasted more than 24 hours because I never felt the need to.

My first child was not raw the first year of her life, nursing the first 6 months of her life.  My 2nd and 3rd chirdren have been totally raw.  Then again my wife and I want them to remain raw when they start going to school with other kids so we don't force it on them, or try to control them.  If we go to a birthday my older son will ask for a piece of birthday cake, he will have a few forkfulls, and then more play with it than anything else.  Bowls of M&M's on the tables, my kids don't even know what they are!  Before going to a family party or birthday we feed them just before, in the car, with something filling, like raw bison, beef, raw milk cheese, so they are even less interested.

They do get their carbs, simple sugars, they eat fruit, preferably organic..farmers market is best!  We go to U-picks in the summer when we can, and they eat wild fruit!  My son found wild apples on the ground at a party we were at and starting eating them, he came and told me..of course the other parents were pretty unhappy when they saw their own kids wanted to eat the wild apples..so they told them they would get sick!  My wife looked at my son, well he's not sick yet!  At a vegan raw food potluck, my son couldn't care less about what was being served, we looked over and his face and hands were covered with wild berries he found on the ground, under a tree in this park were at! 

We've come to truly trust their senses in terms of what they need to eat.  We just keep a variety of foods available and they will ask for this or that.  I make them a "chocolate sauce", cashews, water, raw cacao, a few dates, or some honey, in a vitamix, then blend in a vitamix, and they like to add raw carob.  Cashews are high in carbs, as are most of the foods in the chocolate sauce.  The fat in the cashews slows the sugars.  We make them popsicles from fruit, papaya, watermelon, mango, and then add either raw cow or sheep yogurt, or cow or sheep butter.  We're really pretty careful not to give them straight sugars, like dates or fruit smoothies.  They love love love raw eggs, so if one of them drinks 5 or 6 raw eggs then they have whole fruit, maybe strawberries or blueberries. 

I make a variety of that chocolate sauce, and then put dabs of it on sheets in a dehydrator and make them cookies!  They love them, the other night they had cookies and cheese for dinner!  They also eat a decent amount of seaweed out of the bag, Dulse is what they like!

So they get plenty of carbs, is this what you meant by carbs???  They hardly ever get concentrated carbs, maybe by mistake at grandma and grandpas..but my parents are getting better and listening to my wife and I!

You're probably right, they do need more carbs, all of these things we make my wife and I for the most part don't eat!

Well that's a kind of mishmash of information, would be happy to help or answer any questions!  How many kids do you have what do they live off of??  We could probably exchange a wealth of information here!

Ancestor of the jackfruit, smaller and sweeter. A real delight.

That's quite impressive. You have also chosen a mate wisely in that you agree on the ways to order your life. So many don't.

My only disagreement might be in dates. Not trying to talk you into them but Medjool dates are a very nutritious item. They contain sugar but in a good gentle form. They encourage gentle cleaning of the bowels and taste great. They were suggested to me and I soak them overnight in water to soften and then add milk and mix in the blender briefly. Naturally this may not be appropo for everyone.

They are the best quality dates. They are the large ones shaped like a walnut. Just a thought.

I used to eat lots of dulse when I was younger when I was around it which wasn't very often.

Thanks for the compliment about choosing the right mate, I was fortunate though, that I had been raw for about 10 years when I met my wife, and I made it clear that's what I eat. 

Did I say something bad about dates??  I use dates as a sugar for my kids when I make them stuff, better than honey, lower glycemic level, dates have fiber, nutrition, dates are great, but they are not for me!  I used to eat a lot of dates when I first went raw, even a few years into being raw, but now I find I do best with very low glycemic foods, very little fruit, no dried fruit.  All of this stuff that we do is really on a trial and error basis, some need more sugar, others less, some higher fat foods, some only fish and eggs.  Over the years I have followed very simple diet plans for weeks or months at a time.  Very simple foods, simple meals.  Find digestion to be easier.

Cempedak looks good, does it taste much like Durian??  Looks similar to a Durian.  We also eat Lychees, my kids like them, and I find it is one of the few fruits that my body does well with.

I avoid dates like the plague.  Dates like you get in the supermarket , for some reason, make my eyes weep some sort of strange, black stuff so that it looks like I'm wearing mascara, not a good look. I doubt any of the dates I get in the UK aren't filled with some sort of preservative or chemical.

Yep, those are the dates we'll use, Medjool!  Very good!  We only buy organic, doesn't matter how moist they are, because we soak them, or use them in mixes so they mix into whatever we make.  Use them to make cookies, ice cream, popsicles, drinks, stuff like that, stuff for the kids!  I can't eat them though.
