Marrow Bones

I got a 10 pound bag of grass fed marrow bones from a local butcher. I had a friend pick them up for me as they were out of town. Upon receiving them, they were about 9" long on average.

What are my best options for splitting these bones and getting the marrow?

1. Returning to the butcher to have them sawn lengthwise?
2. Getting them sawn in short segments across the bone?

any options for splitting the bones myself? I don't really want to buy a meat cutting band saw (unless cheap enough).

Just cutting/sawing them in half at the middle of the bone is fine. Though I haven't tried it, I'd imagine that, with either end of the bone being wider than the middle, you could even just put it on the floor and whack it in the middle with the edge of a heavy rock and break it in half.

Couldn't you just crack them with a hammer or stone? If you have space outside and some privacy, you could try that.

Or get them sawed.

I agree with this as the quickest and easiest solution. I've got a 2.2 pound sledge I picked up at the hardware store for very little (maybe $15) and it'll go through bone easily. I used it to punch a hole through a deer skull with one solid blow so it wouldn't take more than 2-3 good hits on a leg bone to break it open. You could do it with a rock as well but it might not be as easy leverage-wise.
