 That's odd. Bone marrow is dirt-cheap in the UK(1 pound fifty a kilo), even when one takes into account the fact that one has to buy the bone as well.

Marrow is pretty cheap where I live.  I usually pay USD1.99 per pound, even when I buy free-range, antibiotic and hormone-free.

It all depends. When I insist on bones rich in marrow, I get something like 6-inch long  bones , with the marrow-fat being c. 1 inch(?) in diameter, running through the whole 6 inches of bone.The bone may well form most of the weight, even so, but raw marrow fat is so concentrated a food, that I really don't need much of it anyway.

    I can't even find back fat most of the time.  Marrow is what I can get.

I weighed it out on a scale before and $1/lb of bones rich in marrow worked out to $5.38/lb of pure marrow.

Yes, I once got marrow bones from wild deer but they were so small that they were not worth the bother, in the long term.

I can get dodgy, farmed "wild boar", but not genuine wild boar, without being a hunter.

In Arizona I go to a local butcher and can get anything that comes from their grassfed, no hormone/antibiotic cows. Try the phone book or ask around at a local farmer's market, or even health food store. Maybe even google for a local rancher and call them up.

I don't get grassfed marrow bones yet, as my regular market hasn't had any yet, despite my trying to special order. I may end up buying it from the other healthfood market. Like Lex, I prefer simplicity, and thus only having to go to one market, but I would like to try GF marrow, as the supermarket stuff tastes pretty lousy to me.

really? i love trying to find new sources of meat, fat, eggs, wild fruit, etc. i don't mind going to lots of places to get a good variety of foods. it'd be too easy to get everything from one place    i like to try and pretend my shopping is my form of hunting and gathering. gotta put in the effort to get good food. different strokes for different folks i guess

and related to the original post, i love bone marrow. it probably does cost a good amount per pound, but it's worth it in my opinion. probably my favorite raw food. just found a good source of grass fed bison marrow too. interestingly, this marrow is much darker in color and has a different taste (in a good way) than the grass fed beef marrow i can get. and i think it's cheaper. i got four 8 inch long bison bones for $4. i'd say that's a win

Yeah, grainfed raw marrow is so bland it's  a real trial to eat it.

Re FMs:- I used to visit endless farmers`markets but the trouble is that only a few of them in London are truly outstanding, so I've stuck to just 1 or 2 in the last few years. Now that I plan on moving, I think I will try some different places.
