Musical instruments you play?
« on: November 23, 2010, 02:40:01 am »
What musical instruments do you play? I played cello for 5-6 years but quit due to lack of motivation and practice. Now I'm trying to learn  piano because I'd like to eventually compose and write songs. If voice counts as intrument.. then I guess I can say I sing, but not very well (Contralto I think).

As a child, I used to play the recorder moderately well. That was it, though.

Acoustic/electric guitar, a bit of trumpet, pedal steel guitar, bass, harmonica, Roland GR33 Guitar Synth (definitely not paleo  :o ;) ) Great for overdubbing recordings.
Cheers

Guitar, bass, drums/percussion, harmonica, keys, variety of guitar-related stringed instruments (mandolin, etc.), melodic percussion, voice, wooden flute & other "primitive instruments".....

But nothing in the brass or woodwinds family.

Drum-kit, don't play it now but I have gone through periods of playing it and been in two bands when I was at school. Won battle of the bands! Could only do repeating patterns with variations and fills etc though.. Could never just freestyle. Related: I used to build crazy-awesome, massive complex lego-buildings when I was younger, always symmetrical and neat, functional etc... I used to be fascinated by other peoples' buildings, how they could just throw the stuff together, no symmetry, bits missing etc.. I would just enjoy looking at that stuff so much, it just seemed so relaxed. Same with the drums. I could play really good beats, fast, slow, perfect timing with fills and stuff but I could only learn some beat, get really good at it, and mix stuff into it, vary it etc. Some people weren't as good as me at that stuff, but they could just sit down and start playing random stuff and it would sound good.. I've never been able to do that. I just love when people can do stuff like that, scrappy/casual, I guess because I can't do it it's just amazing for me.

None, now.

As a child, I used to play the recorder moderately well. That was it, though.

I gave up too.  I was the best in wooden recorder, wood clarinet, saxosophone, piano, percussion and voice & music theory in my first elementary school, but then my parents started hiding me away in all kinds of academies that didn't necessarily have music programs, so I just quit music, and haven't continued in it.

I play piano. The last piece I learned was Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, and the easier parts of Waldstein. It took a lot of time and practice, but was well worth it.

I haven't played too much lately but my GF has been on my case about it so I dug out a guitar and had a ball playing along to the movie "Across The Universe".
Cheers
