Eating fish skins?
« on: December 14, 2010, 03:19:27 am »
I tried some smoked fish skins over the weekend and loved them!
They were the bellies so they are much softer than the top.
I was wondering if anyone has enjoyed eating them raw?

I have eaten them raw, though I didn't enjoy them. Tasted kind of nasty to me. Maybe if you combine the fish and the skin together they would taste better raw.

I tried eating raw salmon skin but its too tough and unappetizing: starvation food.
Sometimes we buy cold smoked salted cods and the skin on those I do eat, as well as the thin bones, chew them up and swallow.
I tried eating some raw ocean smelts whole but they didn't taste good and made me woozy after - perhaps the smelts wern't good but I got them fresh so I dunno.

I eat fish-skins sometimes such as mackerel skin. It's OK, nothing special, being a bit bland. I wouldn't bother with smoked skin of fish, of course.

Yes, I've eaten them raw, along with the raw salmon meat.  It was ok.  It was healthy for me.  I'm not doing it now.  It never gave me a problem, I just don't bother.  When I was eating it, I was cutting it up small with a knife.

No matter how fresh the fish is, I find the skin normally has a really strong odor that I don't like. I just can't bring myself to eat it.

Tried it... I won't be doing that again anytime soon. No ill effects to speak of, but it was gross.

I agree, I'd only eat it if I felt I had to.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I sometimes ate the salmon skin, after I de-scaled it of course. I would never want to eat the scales of fish if I had a choice.

I used to cut it up into small pieces with scissors or a knife, and eat them. However, at some point it became nauseating to eat the skin, and I had a gag reflex when I tried to. This started to make me feel averse towards fish in general. So, I stopped eating the skins raw.

Interestingly, I've found that if I cook the skin by steaming it, it tastes much better. However, I believe cooking fish skins creates unhealthy compounds that when consumed can damage the body. So I avoid them now.

Maybe if you wrap salmon skins around something else to get rid of the taste it won't be so bad.

Why would you do that? If it tastes bad there's a reason.

Fish skins are the most delicious food in the world. This morning, I had one pound of whole raw mackerel with the skin, bones, eyes and everything. I love the skin of raw salmon and I always ask the fishmonger for any extra skins if people decide to skin their fish. Eat the skin bro... it's awesome! Shame on anyone who throws away the skin :-) Send it over to me and I'll savour every single bite :-)

High five for conservation!
Do you prepare them in any way? Or do you just gulp them down?

Contrary to my last post in this thread about personally avoiding fish skins, today I ate salmon with the skin.
Whereas before I would eat the skin separately from the meat out of convenience, today I ate the skin with the meat. I did make sure to descale it very carefully. It tasted good! I will now start eating salmon with the skins, provided I don't get any nausea.

I think what made the difference this time was that I ate the skin with the meat instead of at a separate time. I was also very careful to not eat any scales, as I remember feeling nausea(Gag reflex) when some of the scales pieces were in my mouth.
