Survival Kit? Survival Food? Disaster Food?
« on: March 19, 2011, 04:03:50 pm »
Japan disaster is a reminder that things can go wrong and it helps to be prepared.

My wife wants us to assemble survival packs / stashes in different locations, what would you store in those?

I'll start off with what I think:

- Portable water filter (don't know exactly what model yet).
- pemmican? how much?
- canned food with can opener?
- seeds for sprouting?

How about you?

To hell with the seeds! They're useless!

Dried meat/air dried meat/fish/organs(aka faux high meat), dried/air dried fat, plenty of blood.

Sprouting was suggested by James Mc Canney.
Seeds are compact.
They are storable.
And when sprouted give abundant food.

But I'm interested to know why they are useless?

The enzyme inhibitors in seeds and vegetable oils. Even when sprouted, I used to sprout, they gave me stomach aches still meaning the enzyme inhibitors were still there/sprouting didn't get rid of the enzyme inhibitors. I class them with grains, they're all seeds and filled with anti nutrients and enzyme inhibitors and do more harm than good. In extreme survival cases sure eat pistachos. Google enzyme inhibitors nuts and seeds

Another good survival food is insects like grasshoppers, etc, plenty of protein and fats more than a steak ounce for ounce and can be dried or air dried or dehydrated for long time use like in mexico or asia.

You're not stressing about enzyme inhibitors during a survival situation....
That's not paleo.

Almost a year ago, if I'm correct about the date, aajonus in newsletter came out with how to make a survival kit, his version of course.  Looked good to me, but I haven't really tried a paleo survival kit.  I used to go the seed route/sprouting for survival food.

Ok, off to take care of my cooler etc for now.

To me the most important thing about survival is knowledge. People were thriving long before we had manufactured (in the purchased sense) and it is now different today. With what I've learned over the last couple years I feel confident walking out the door in spring and not coming back inside until mid winter, but I'm working on that part right now. I could probably survive winter but thrive, maybe not.

Anyway, as long as the natural world isn't wiped out in a given scenario then you should be able to provide your self food, shelter and clothing from knowledge alone. That also goes a long way in maintaining good morale because you won't feel like a fish out of water.

I would think the equipment you would want would be protection against the real nasties like radiation/chemicals/ etc. So gas masks, and whatever else that would involve.

bump.

I'm becoming very concerned about emergency preparedness.

Pemmican seems like one of the best storable paleo foods. I would also like to know what the Aajonus survival kit contains. I can't seem to find it online.

I'm definitely going to buy a 55-gallon water barrel from emergency essentials soon.

What about dried/jerky/high meat or just meat left on a hook with free air flowing to preserve it? Or smoked meats?

Personally, for a survival kit, I would store as much water as I could, either in liter bottles or gallon sized....at least 15 gallons, maybe more....

Then I would store canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned fishes and meats....as well as some nuts.

Also in the freezer I would store frozen vegetables and frozen fruits, and maybe some meat. In an emergency you can eat the foods in the freezer first, and then keep the canned food for later...at least as a general plan.

I'd probably also store some white rice/ split lentils    (As these cook the fastest) and some burnable material....                         (that's why extra water can come in handy...for cooking)
, and lighters/matches..plenty of them.

I know a lot of these foods aren't considered healthy on this forum for long term use, ....however I figure that in a survival situation new priorities become important.

Pemmican is supposed to keep forever, and it's nutritionally very sound, so I would lay in a lot of that.

Canned food, packets as well, for if the pemmican's compromised.

Vitamin and mineral pills if you have to live on crap.

Don't know much about the survival tools side.

I think not.  Look at world war 2 leading to a baby boom.
Lots of people will be killed and humanity needs to replenish.
It's instinct.

I have a couple of kids now, but what if 1 or some of them die?
It will be in mine and my wife's genetic interest to replace the lost kid.
Instinctive sex me thinks.

We have a whole bunch of rice and various seed, dahls, spices nuts and dried fruit from our vege days. I keep them in Mason jars. It wasn't planned but it's there and I am sure we will keep us alive for quite awhile. Something like a bow is a good idea. So is a water filter.

What's the shelf life of pemmican?
Cheers
Al
