People fall into three categories of gut microbiota, called enterotypes, metagenomics study shows
20/04/2011
?Enterotypes can explain efficiency of uptake of nutrients and medicines

Every person’s intestinal system falls into one of three clearly distinguishable types of gut microbiota, comparable to blood types. These types are not related to race, native country or diet, according to a new metagenomics study by an international consortium of scientists (MetaHIT) including Jeroen Raes, of VIB and Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Metagenomics is the study of the genetic material of complete ecosystems, in this case the human gut. Nature is publishing the results.

“The three gut types can explain why the uptake of medicines and nutrients varies from person to person,” says bioinformatician Jeroen Raes of the VIB and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, one of the two lead researchers in the study. “This knowledge could form the basis of personalized therapies. Treatments and doses could be determined on the basis of the gut type of the patient.”

Improved knowledge of the gut types could also lead to other medical applications, such as the early diagnosis of intestinal cancer, Crohn’s disease and the adverse effects of obesity.

* my comment: Good for these researchers.  They are playing catch up with our collective RPD experiences.  We know a good amount about gut flora by experience and from that of our other self experimentors.

Very interesting. I would suspect the matter to be infinitely more complex though.

This would tell us a lot more of what someone is supposed to eat than bloodtype. They say it is unsure if it is possible to change gut flora type. If not that would go a long way in explaning why some people cannot stand omnivorous and some cannot stand carnivorous diets. I suspect that one can at least influence gut life to a degree.

May also explain why some are more prone to candida overgrowth.

preserve the meat, deliver a baby, nurture the sick and reassure the dying, fight a war … specialization is for insects.”

Yes, maybe there's something in it, but it's a bit like how they do a study into low carb that lasts a month and then say 'ah well fat is a less efficient fuel'. He says they just don't know anyway.

Interesting though. It might be why people settle on different versions of raw paleo etc. - whatever the original paleo diet is, it could be hard to change the bacterial ecosystem you've ended up with.

In my experience for myself and the people I've touched, it is fairly easy to change the bacterial ecosystem with special techniques.

You can clear out your entire gut with virgin coconut oil detoxing.

Then replenish your gut with the ecosystem you prefer.

There are many brands of probiotics out in the market,  I'd believe most are targetted at giving you an ecosystem that is able to digest cooked foods. Some here use high meat.

Load up on those many expensive probiotics and see if the new gut flora you've got suits your needs.

If you are unhappy, clear yourself out again and use a different combination of probiotics.

----------

My current gut flora tolerates cooked food to a better degree than last year or 2 years ago.  When I sabotage myself for socials, my gut just tries to poop everything out as fast as possible.  My old gut flora was just raw paleo specific I would roll in pain from eating cooked food.

Are you saying that VCO will also get rid of healthy, probiotic bacteria in the gut?
"In the modern, prevailing view of the cosmos, we sit here as tiny, unimportant specks of protoplasm, flukes of nature, and stare out into an almost limitless void. Vast, nameless tracts of emptiness dominate the scene. Talk about feeling small.
But we do not look out at the universe; it is, instead, within us, as a rich 3-D visual experience whose location is the mind" - R. Lanza, Beyond Biocentrism.

VCO detox is VCO + salt + water + lemons = it seems to do that, remove the yeast / fungi.

I forgot to add another thing I did to clear out my flora, I zapped with a ZAPPER then re-colonized my gut.

Zappers are electrical, they don't care what bacteria you got.

I used the small portable "world without parasites" zapper.

Interesting. You reckon if I do the coconut thing I might have more luck eating raw? I tried probiotics a couple of days ago, and it didn't seem to be much use. A very small amount of honey (1/2 teaspoon after each meal) seems to be helping.

Actually I just read about coconut oil detox, and it talks about die-off symptoms when you do it, so maybe that's all that happened in the first place with eating raw. Maybe I should push through the illness with raw and see what happens.
