Tools to make bone meal
« on: June 26, 2011, 12:53:58 am »
I have read that some here have used files to make their own bone meal. Does anyone have any specific product recommendations? Are there any other methods that others would like to share?

I use a Nichols woodcraft rasp like these:  http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=4103&familyName=Half+Round+File+and+Rasp

I clamp the file in a vice so the finer side is facing up and the file is at an angle.  I then put something under the file to catch the bone dust, and run the bone over the file over and over.  You'll get a mildly unpleasant "burnt bone" smell as you file away, but this does the job.  I usually couple this with carving bone arrowheads for hunting season.

I prefer shagbark hickory, white oak, white ash and eastern hophornbeam for bows.  They're dense woods and are fairly common around where i live.
