Raw paleo breastfeeding?
« on: July 17, 2011, 03:11:11 pm »
My girlfriend and I are about to have our first kid, neither of us are on the raw paleo diet fully. She hasn't tried yet, but she's willing. She's worried eating raw meat could harm the child, with the whole e coli, salmonella scare we have been taught. It makes sense to me that it would be the healthiest for my child to be fed breast milk from a raw meat eating mother, and I want the best for him. But in the back of my mind I have this fear it might do him harm. Can you guys give us some comfort in this? Anything that could help us not worry...

Thank you!

-Ron

My 2 cents on this are:

Your wife's body has already calculated its trajectory based on her current diet.  So diet change will involve detox of sorts and that detox may detox through her breast milk.

If I were in your shoes, I the man would go ahead with my shift to raw paleo diet.

The woman, well, after birth, she might want to shift gradually over a period of many months so as to avoid a sudden detox through her milk.

You might want to ask our ladies here who have motherly experience.

That makes sense. Exactly how can the detox harm the baby?

Also, how do you recommend easing into paleo for her? I read that it's not good to mix cooked and raw food so I don't know how it will work.

Exactly how can the detox harm the baby?

Toxins from the body will contaminate many of the secretions and excretions from the body during times of detoxification.  In other words poisons may enter the breast-milk while they are leaving her body using her breast-milk as a vehicle to carry them away from her, more poisons than what she might have currently ate at a time previously, some possibly that her body had stored so deep that it had not been detected before.

Maybe she can find and join an online forum for and by breastfeeding mothers or geared toward healthy and mostly natural mothering.  Also, depending on her health, someone like av may suggest to make a RAFD replacement formula for breast-milk for your baby's best health.

How would you recommend she "eases" into raw Paleo? I heard that eating cooked food with raw is not a good choice. So I don't know how to go about this.

Hi Ron.  I think I got salmonella or something once or twice while breastfeeding my son.  Both mine and his stomachs were messed up for a few days.  I had to switch him over to cultured rice mylk for a few days (it's all I could get than he could keep down).  My milk was upsetting his stomach.  I think it was good though, I think I made immunities to it for him too.  I know boxed formula never would.  I'd say just breastfeed.  Let her change at her pace, with the goal in mind.  Take good care of baby, love him/her, pay attention, be responsive as things come up but not over responsive ... he/she will have both of you, I think it will be fine.  I'm sure my son's father never even noticed when he got sick.

I have no personal experience breastfeeding paleo, unless you count my Mom having breastfed me as a baby on a mostly cooked paleo diet.  That's why I say get involved with a current group of actively naturally raising parents, specific to parenting.  I was almost entirely vegan if not entirely the whole time I gave breast milk.  Breastfeeding still has benefits to the child and family, even if the milk isn't always perfect.

Encourage her to eat lots of raw animal fat if she wants to go more Raw Paleo, that should take care of most of the toxins. Raw butter and raw cheese is excellent for this purpose, too. Let the change take time rather than go cold turkey. Give her lots of good organ meats, that is crucial both during pregnancy and lactation. She can just swallow raw organic liver or bone marrow in small pieces every day with water or milk if she doesn´t like the taste, just for the nutrition. I would recommend the cod liver oil from Green Pastures or the mix they sell with cod liver and butter oil, too, in her case. Good breast milk is all about the fat soluble vitamins, and that is impossible to get enough of on a SAD. Eat RAF in front of your baby and let him/her taste it when he/she wants. They usually get interested around 4-6 months to try some solid food. Let it be RAF for the benefit of the nutrition and bacteria. The baby will probably want to nurse for a long while to complement small portions of solid food. My kids nursed for about 2,5 years each, and would have kept doing that much longer if I had let them.

Why does fat help with the toxins? How much fat?

Fat stores toxins and acts as a vehicle for removing it from the body.
