Hey, I'm Son of Salmon
« on: October 04, 2008, 04:02:26 pm »
Hi, my name's Darren.

I've had depression, severe fatigue, sinus congestion, acne, and some other stuff since god knows when. Plus I've been skinny my entire life and tired of it.
For nearly the last three years I've been some kind of vegetarian. Although I felt lighter and more focused without eating meat I didn't have much energy and felt zombie-like much of the time, but because I'm so damn stubborn I stuck to it for 2 1/2 years. So I discovered raw veganism and did that for three months. In certain ways I felt a lot better like I wasn't depressed about much, except food which was ruling my life at the time. I felt way more mental clarity which is what I liked best. But I thought about nothing but food, was needing tons of sleep, had intense cravings, no motivation, and something just felt missing. AND I didn't want to risk getting any thinner to be honest. The last month of my raw veganism I was on the 80/10/10 diet which is basically fruitarian + greens. God, it sounds great on paper but I consider this the most potentially dangerous raw vegan diet. I was basically relying on sugar highs to function. It did teach me to not rely on complex, gourmet-type food all the time, which was hard since I used to love cooking to the point of considering it for a career.
Well that stuff didn't work and the last week I ate whatever cooked food I wanted to. I've been allergic to dairy the past year, so I didn't eat that. And I began to intuitively realize that wheat was not making me feel so well. Part of me has been wanting to move toward raw again, but not the way I've been doing it. The last couple days I've been eating Paleo, with everything being raw except the meat. I'm now ready to make that raw as well. Actually today I ate all raw, eating sashimi and ceviche. I'm pretty phobic about beef. I think I'll marinate it in lime juice like ceviche in the beginning. I don't have We Want to Live yet or any kind of raw meat book, so I'm holding on to whatever advice I can get. I'm broke so I'll probably gravitate more toward non-organic meat, but I WILL check the local farmer's market tomorrow to see what they have. I'm keeping raw meat a secret from my mom because I know she'll freak out about it, and that might lead to some mischief later on. I still have a lot of questions that I can't think of right now, but I'll save that for a different time!

Ciao!

Welcome to the forum! And good luck on your path to health.

Here's a standard topic to read when first going rawpalaeo:-

http://www.rawpaleoforum.com/general-discussion/sticky-advice-for-newbies-wishing-to-slowly-ease-into-a-raw-animal-food-diet/

(also read all the other sticky topics in the General Discussions forum).

(given that many of your symptoms seem reminiscent of my own past issues pre-rawpalaeodiet, it might be an idea to get hold of thyroid or adrenal glandulars). Did you turn to Raw Veganism for simple health reasons or because you gradually found that you couldn't digest cooked animal food well?

I had problems with my mom. She got OK with it now, but still says negative comments of discouragement about it. My brother keeps on telling me not to eat it. He just came back from the marines and wants to be a vegetarian.  l)

Yeah, my parents had a hard time with it first as well, but I think they kind of got used to it.
Plus I showed them a whole bunch of research, and while I don't think they believed it, they at least knew that I knew what I was doing, and they respected that. Plus they saw that I wasn't dead.

I find it's best never to argue with others being negative about you or your diet - that leads to defensiveness on your part. The best solution is to either go on the attack, or to make it clear that it's their problem not yours(eg:- " I see you got out the wrong side of the bed this morning"). Though, admittedly, I rarely get people this antagonistic to my diet - usually, they just close their minds and pretend that I've always been as healthy as this, even pre-rawpalaeodiet, and I just ignore this as it's rather silly.

As far as money goes if you're in the US you can get pretty good prices of very high quality meat shipments from Slanker's. Their beef cubes are about $5/lb and their suet is less than $2/lb, if you mix them together about equally you have a very good staple food for this diet at around $4/lb. And if you're willing to mix in some of the preground dog and cat food mix (which I just started trying and it is rather strong and hard to get used to) then you can bring the price down even further (and add more nutrients from the organs mixed in) to around maybe $3/lb or less for your staple mix.

I've heard those before I especially like the 'were humans not animals' and were not made to eat raw meat!

My Mum is open to eating raw meat and eats it about once a week (eggs, liver, tartare) She can't stop cooking though, it's what she does and it's her comfort even though I think it would completely clear up her minor ailments. She wants to eat more blames Dad a bit which is true, he is a pain in the arse and resistant to anything new.
