Would you eat grain-finished ground beef raw?
« on: November 14, 2011, 01:35:14 am »
I bought two pounds of grass-fed, grain-finished ground beef without knowing it was grain finished so I was wondering if you think it is safe to eat raw. I trust my other sources of raw meat, but this grain finished beef less so (the company feeds their cows spelt before slaughter because they think it improves flavor). Any thoughts?

I wouldn't eat neither ground meat nor grain finished meat unless I'm starving.
Cause and effect are distant in time and space in complex systems, while at the same time there’s a tendency to look for causes near the events sought to be explained. Time delays in feedback in systems result in the condition where the long-run response of a system to an action is often different from its short-run response. — Ronald J. Ziegler

Safe? The grain-finished factor won't instantly kill you or make you immediately sick, but I would return it and make my preference clearly known. Specifically, I would tell the company that beef's flavor is just fine without their "improvement." Also, I don't eat ground beef because it is at risk for being contaminated by who-knows-what; then the microscopic who-knows-what can breed within an air-free environment. This happens with ground meats often. For example, there is a case right now involving fatalities and severe illness from ground turkey meat.

Just curious, Iguana, why such strong opposition to ground meat? Totally just wondering- I don't know jack about meat; ground tastes all right to me, if it's grass-fed....

I had been in the habit up to a month or so ago of eating 1 pound per day of raw grain-fed beef for approx. 7 months. No problems(although the grass-fed was better)....

grass fed, corn finished ground beef over here....I buy the beef by the side and get it all ground up.  40-60oz/day, no issues here.  But I do know my farmer, butcher, and animal!  They say it's grass finished since corn is considered a grass, but nothing otherwise

Since Iguana has not noticed this thread/post, I'll add my own viewpoint re this:- most RVAFers find that they over-eat if they eat raw, ground meat, not  solid raw muscle-meat. Also, many butchers use cleaning fluid on their knives and other equipment such as grinding machines every so often, so that some people can get reactions to the chemicals within ground meats. By contrast, raw solid muscle-meats can be easily washed with water on their surfaces.

It's not safe to eat.

I wouldn't say it's unsafe, I've definitely eaten it before and not ended up sick.

But it's less tasty and less nutritious.
