Hi! New to this forum and Raw Paleo
« on: December 20, 2011, 12:07:43 am »
Hi! Like the subject said, I'm a real newbie. I've been reading up on Paleo/Primal for a little while now. I've been working on changing my eating also, with a little difficulty. Although I read about a primal blogger who also ate mostly raw meat, I didn't realize until just this weekend (after finding this forum) just how many people were doing it. I've done a little reading about it, and it's very intriguing to me. I have done an all (cooked) meat diet for a short amount of time previously and felt pretty good on it.

I know that a mainly meat diet is what I need now, in fact mostly red meat. I recently found out my ferritin (iron stores) are extremely low. I am looking in to the medical reason that they are so low. In the mean time I do need to raise the numbers because it's leaving me very fatigued and cold (among other things). After trying to fix it with iron supplements and feeling like crap from them, I've decided to try and do it with food. I'm not quite sure if raw is better, but I am willing to try it to see how I feel.

So right now I am trying to ease in to it a little. I am definitely cutting out all non-Paleo things (wheat, other grains), but I am not 100% raw yet. I tried some raw beef liver this weekend. I chewed the first piece. It didn't make me gag initially, but the after taste was pretty bad. Then I cut some up in to small pieces and swallowed it. Not as bad tasting, but very time consuming. I also tried a thick steak super rare (just seared each side for a minute). It was pretty good, although the contrasting temperatures (warm outside and cold inside) wasn't very pleasant.

I look forward to learning more about this way of life and getting advice from everyone.

Welcome to the forum!

Here is  a thread which describes a few tips on how to get used to eating raw animal foods:-

http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com/important-info-for-newbies/sticky-advice-for-newbies-wishing-to-slowly-ease-into-a-raw-animal-food-diet/

The following threads in this list will also explain to some extent why raw is always better:-

http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com/important-info-for-newbies/

(I am extremely concerned as regards the use of the word "primal" to describe a "palaeo" diet. For one thing, "rawpalaeo" is a hell of a lot more "primal" than a cooked, palaeolithic diet, plus Aajonus Vonderplanitz has already used the label "primal diet" to describe  his own RVAF diet, so it's an infringement of copyright.

Welcome to the forum.

It's a big idea. I big step this thing we are into here. Just as big as the leap is so can the rewards be.

Some people like jumping off the side of the cliff and others like to scale down back into the valley one foothold at a time with rests on ledges. Neither way is better, it's about fitting this thing to your needs and proclivities.

Searing meat tastes awful to me too. I don't like the contrast either. Only raw meat tastes any good to me at all. Liver is the hardest way to start if you ask me. The only way I can eat liver is if it's well-hidden.

Next time with that steak I suggest you get the sharpest knife you can and sharpen it again. Then slice off pieces of the raw steak (room temperature) as thin as you possibly can. It will be steak sashimi and changes the texture and taste. It will melt in your mouth if it's good meat. Much better than searing if you ask me.

Oh - and make sure you get grass-fed. Very important.

Cheers!

Thank you both. I will check out the links. When I said Primal, I was referring to the primal blueprint website specifically. Not trying to step on anyone's toes.  :D

To mommyrunmommy--where in the country are you?  There are probably some wild game processors you can get organs and fat from near you, for a very low price.  Also, sometimes butchers can get you grass-fed organs and fat cheaply.

Welcome mrm!

No worries about your use of primal, not sure what Ty was getting at, and that seems like an odd thing to go out of one's way to declare. Glad you are open to breaking the mold though. A whole new world of health is waiting, enjoy!

Ty, that is kind of a strange way to greet newcomers. Are you trying to turn people away before they even get started? MRM seems to have handled it with grace but others might find that kind of thing very distasteful right off the bat. And newbies will get familiar with all the terms in due course, the fact that they are here is the miracle in the first place!

Like Dorothy said, liver is a pretty strong meat to begin with, it has a ton of real flavor from real nutrients and it takes time to get used to that sort of thing. Stick with it though, having nips here and there, and like anything, your body and tastebuds will become accustomed to it in time. Starting off with muscle meats and maybe heart would be a good way to go.

As for the temperature contrast you will find later, as you lose the psychological barriers to raw foods, such as unnecessary phobias of microbes, you will be ok with leaving your meat out for a while to come to room temp, from there, they can be gently warmed to body temperature or very quickly seered (for flavor, warmth, NOT health) to raise the temp a bit. I don't care for cold meat much during the winter, but it's more appealing during the summer when temps are higher.

Making sure your liver is 100% grass fed ('pastured' doesn't cut it, they can still feed grains and soy under that label) beef and as fresh as possible helps to ensure a crisp, clean flavor, instead of a raunchy foul odor and taste. Real liver should be bright purple, NOT gray or other off colors and should look radiant and smell clean.

I'm located in the San Francisco Bay Area (in California, USA). I have a ton of grass fed, organic options. I love that, unfortunately right now my family isn't in a financial position to spend extra on that. My husband is out of work and we have 4 kids. The grass fed liver is pretty cheap, so that's the only grass fed item I'll be able to afford for now. I have checked in to the local farms and their prices are pretty steap - not much different than local grocery stores. I know we wont be in this financial position for long, so as soon as we can afford it I will switch to GF. For now my main concern is regaining health and energy, so I can help change things for my family.

I really appreciate your tips. I will keep working on the liver, I don't mind the flavor, will just take some getting used to it.

I wasn't targetting the poster. I was simply not happy, in general, with  gurus like Mark Sissons(?) using the term "primal" to describe/label their diet. We've already had raw vegans hijacking the term "raw, palaeolithic diet" to describe their diet and now we have cooked-palaeodiet gurus confusing people as well. It means that a number of people have mistakenly come here, thinking that this was a cooked-palaeodiet forum, for example.

Wean away from all pharmaceutical drugs... including contraceptives.
If you cannot eat it, do not put it on your skin... alcohol, lotion, perfume, deodorant, etc.
Wean away from all manufactured "vitamins" and "supplements".
Replace all that with real raw paleo food which is far superior.
Condiments need to go out the door eventually.

Welcome!  And hope you have great success adjusting and finding sources like we did.
