Are these eggs safe to consume raw?
« on: March 01, 2012, 10:25:41 pm »
These eggs are bought from the company Farmers Hen House. The chickens are brown, vegetarian fed, cage free, no animal biproducts, and supplemented with flax seeds so that they produce omega 3s in the eggs.

chickens are supposed to eat animal food stuff(bugs, worms etc) as a large part of their diet. Flax oil is probably rancid and oxidated thus toxic for them. I wouldn't eat them...

They are fine to consume raw although not a high quality source for eggs.

GS' comment points out that chickens are not herbivores and marketing campaigns that tout so are backwards. "Vegetarian fed" in any way shape or form is a marketing technique to cover up the fact that these animals were fed grains and legumes and large amounts of such, which also raises the possibility of GM grain and legumes (unless explicitly stated otherwise). Such campaigns were created to obfuscate the truth and confuse the consumer.

He stated flax seeds not flax oil.

i have had those raw before.  they are better then non-health food store eggs but still very low quality.  where do you live? can you check craigslist for local eggs or eatwild.com, localharvest.com?

Those sound similar to the eggs I eat during the winter (now).  They're not going to make you sick, they're just not as great eggs as from some other places.

Farmer's market season, I get straight up free range ones, and they have a color and flavor that can't be found in any supermarket egg.

During the winter here the birds aren't going to be eating bugs because there aren't any. At least they're cage free though.
