I wanted to post this and share with everyone, it's a link to a conversation with a gentle man who makes SOIL by composting EVERYTHING....including raw animals:)!

Jessica - did you see that he has "bone pickers" to pick out the bones and then grinds them up for bone meal?

I will never believe what they say about not adding meat to a compost pile again.

I looked over those pictures in more detail today - really amazing.

The guy has the city bring truckloads of waste to his farm. Now, why can't the city just compost themselves? They could sell or give away the finished compost.

When I lived in florida our tax dollars paid for the city to come and take massive piles of yard waste with big machinery and then they would offer back the mulch to anyone who wanted it.  Just one call and it was gone and went back to the earth.

Why isn't composting just part of what the towns and cities do? There got to be enough unused city lands.

The only real reason besides germ phobia that people say not to add meat to compost is because it attracts scavengers. Not such a problem in the country but folks don't usually like that inside the city, plus the smell issue... we compost meat though, works fine!

yeh! im glad you read that ryan, i love the bone pickin i think its totally ingenious!   ive composted meat before, always throwing whatever the dogs dont eat of random carcases into the mix, i think a lot of people home composts dont burn so hot or quickly either so it would take a much longer time to break down meat but its totally possible, its just insane there arent municipal compost piles in every city, think of that and that if lawns were mini farms, such lush communities we could have.  sucks all the real thinkers, lovers and believers were out doing and not running for office :)

Ooh Ohh we do that too!

If a clean animal dies here on the farm, instead of feeding it straight to the other animals (omnivores, obviously not to animals where it would be unnatural) I let the flies clean it out first and then the chickens and turkeys get it, makes the most amazing eggs! Same idea with cow pies.

I'm working on my black soldier fly composter. The wonderful thing about it is that it's enclosed against scavengers, composts so fast that there is no smell and the maggots self harvest (at least those are the rumors)  ;)  Fingers crossed!

LetsCopOut - the old farmers tell me that what you do is exactly what they did to with carcasses and their chickens.
