Elevated lead
« on: September 02, 2012, 11:25:53 am »
I just recently tested above the safe range for lead. It could be from occupational poisoning or a dirty animal, it could even be a bullet fragment from this sheep that I had to shoot.

6.5; which isn't extremely high, but its still been know to cause health problems in that range. Also my symptoms of low energy and feeling down started about two months ago, so I may have been acutely poisoned back then and the levels have dropped off since.

I also have something odd going on with my white cells. My Eos are over 30, the same thing had occurred in me years ago when I had chronic fatigue syndrome. I would have flare ups and my Eos would shoot up, its a clear sign of either poisoning or parasite infection, or perhaps a combination of the two.

The symptoms are vague and include loss of apatite(I have lost about 10 pounds)
Nauseousness, foggy headed, depression.

Perhaps there is some other kind of poisoning, but the health care system around here is so screwed up that I wont be able to get into a clinic for two months, unless I can come up with a few hundred dollars out of pocket to pay for more extensive testing.

Even if they find anything there probably wont be anything they could do.

I may just need to get more minerals and hope things work out on their own.

I know of a guy who was close to death from lead poisoning.  He reduced his levels by taking food-grade hydrogen peroxide diluted in water, about 20 drops daily of 35% H2O2.

Pectin-rich fruits also appear to be good for detoxing heavy metals.  Drinking lots of water also appears to help.

Sabertooth, I have 7  and my 11 months old daughter has 17 where she sole drinks my breast milk and nothing else. So I also found out my farmer killsthe cow with bullet. The other day, my husband found a piece of bullet in his raw brain and he comes to me saying that he warned me not to eat that farmers meat, 'cause he found the lead. Now what to do?

I always try to avoid shooting an animal, I also worry about contaminated soil. Some old farms have barns and fence rows that were once painted with lead, and even if the old paint was striped off, much of it would fall to the ground where the animals graze. My great great grandfather got lead poisoning from painting barns.

My hair analysis came back and although I have a small level of lead, lead is not the main issue. It seems I am suffering from acute aluminum and manganese poisoning, an excess of potassium, and a deficiency in selenium, zinc, and copper.

The aluminum and manganese levels are literally off the charts, and this alone could be the cause of my symptoms.

Its very possible that I could of picked up aluminum from occupational exposure, and manganese is often a component of aluminum alloys, that are used in electrical conduit, cable and fittings that I often handle. Still I wonder if there may be any other explanation for it.

The question now is, what to do about it? Infrared sauna , supplements, change in occupation, dietary adjustments... I am now thinking that I will have to give up coconut, because it is high in manganese.

There are people who claim with toxicity and deficiency there is a need to take supplements. It is something I am considering.

Apple pectin, Silica, sulfur (msm), copper/zinc and selenium are claimed help deal with aluminum.

There not much information about dealing with manganese naturally?

It kind of sucks to find out that you are poisoned with two elements that are difficult to get rid off, and are known to cause brain damage. I am in desperate need of some good advice right now!

Hi Sabertooth,
for what its worth, in my experience, fasting is often a great starting place, both in terms of reducing bodily excesses, and enabling time to solidify the best individualised approach forward.
I wrote about a recent 5 day water fast I just finished here: http://naturebum.wordpress.com/2012/09/12/fasting/
Kind wishes, J

sabortooth it sounds like you just need to get your deficiencies in check and that they will help balance and alleviate your excesses.  potassium can be high because sodium is low, do you add sea salt to anything? it might be a good idea to use a sprinkle here or there.  zinc is abundant in garlic and selenium is abundant in mustard seed.   zinc is also high in pumpkin seeds, which i recommend to soak AND lightly roast if you are going to eat them.  avocados have copper, but i would not try too hard to get copper up there.

do you eat many vegetables?  celery is a great source of natural sodium, lemons are good as well.  lettuces, parsleys, cilantros, dills and fennels are all a great source of minerals without being difficult to digest raw or warmed.  i would say sauna is always a good idea, but only in addition to adding some extra mineral sources as you do not want to deplete anything further and create more of a deficiency.  supplementing and chelation should be done with food source first to see if that helps to balance the system.

what symptoms where you having that lead you to have your minerals tested? did you do a hair analysis?

Use of the iodine protocol has been shown to greatly increase excretion of lead, aluminum and some other metals. I don 't know if anyone tested for manganese in urine, but would be surprised if it did not work for that too.

Also removes brain fog.

I use it for correcting deficiency disease. It works.

I second what J said, if you're not eating veggies other than coconut, and wanting to detox, I highly recommendo some deeply colored veggies, and I'd go so far as to recommend juicing the veggies she's recommended, such as cilantro, parsley, celery. I also juice peppers, cabbage, lettuce, arugula, ginger, a little carrot/beet, and any other veggies you want to toss in there. I consider juices to be medicinal and detox, not something to do on a regular basis, but your case would certainly be cause for a few rounds of it.

When I get done make a juice it looks like a pine green potion that you can almost feel the energy coming off of. Usually I make about a quart at a time, and take sips throughout the day, not overdoing it because it is powerful stuff. Usually it's 2-3 bunches parsley, 2-3 cilantro and then a little bit of everything else. Has precipitated some intense detoxes, but worth it, and you can mitigate them a little bit going slowly, eating lots of fats with them and resting lots. I'm sure there are other ways to make the detoxes less intense that I'm not recalling at the moment.

EDITE: I just had another thought, do you smoke grass? Depending on where it's grown that could be a source of the elements you mentioned.

I can't believe no one has said this yet, as you are all so knowledgeable!

You should definitely be eating lots and lots of SQUID and CRAB! All three are high in copper, zinc and selenium, and low in magnesium. Crustaceons are high in iodine which will help secrete the manganese.
OYSTERs are very high in copper, zinc and iodine, so you should fight to get your hands some fresh  oysters a day.
Grass fed beef liver and goose liver are both high in B12 (good for detox) and high in copper and selenium.

Cilantro and some other herbs are good with heavy metal balancing, so you should be consuming lots of that too.

Lastly this might sound like a strange one, but try eating underground clay and fat together. Fat does two things, it is a laxative so will help you excrete faster, and it also stores heavy metals by absorbtion-relocation. The fresh underground clay is negatively charged so will help draw metals from your blood into your intestine without passing minerals back into your blood. Fat/clay is a good detox with lots and lots of water.

I have a history of mineral imbalances, prior to starting the paleo diet I had high aluminum and manganese, as well as excess potassium, and deficient in other elements. My recent analysis has shown improvement in may other areas. My iron use to be high, and now it is in perfect range. I once had an extremely high nickle count and now it is way down, my cadmium is down as well. What is concerning is that my manganese has gone up significantly it is 4 times the optimum range, and so has the potassium it is 7 times the optimal range, its off the charts.

The dizzy spells just happened out of nowhere about three months ago. I felt posoned and wasn't able to eat much for a few weeks. My organs we not functioning right, it could even have been some other kind of poisoning, I am still not sure, but the symptoms are still lingering and with a slightly elevated blood lead level it made me suspect some kind of metal poisoning so I had the hair test done.

I have not been using salt, so could start there to re-balance my potassium level

I have some iodine solution, William how much of that would be appropriate?

I want to use natural methods as much as possible but am not sure if I could get the money together to begin juicing a bunch of produce. I will start including what I can into the diet.

Availability of good resources is a big issue for me. I have been doing shoe string budget paleo for the last couple of years.

I buy lamb for 1 a pound on hoof, and get my fat for free. I enjoy eating some vegetables, but the cost of organic produce is outrageous, as is the price of clean ocean creatures.

Earlier into the diet when I was at my fittest I was buying oysters, fish, large amounts of marrow bones and eating more vegetables regularly. Then along comes two more kids, 4 dollar gas and two hundred dollar a month energy bills, and there goes the budget for my paleo diet.

I had a Hair analysis. I did have a blood test for lead, arsenic and mercury, the lead came back slightly elevated, but for chronic accumulation of toxins and testing for mineral deficiencies, blood test are not reliable.

To be certain as to my true condition it would be necessary to have a 24 hour urine test done with a chelating agent, as well as a tissue biopsy analysis. Unfortunately in order to have all the testing done by a specialist, would cost thousands of dollars.

I am sending a message to the head of the CDCs occupational poisoning department, and he may be able to suggest something. I don't think they would be able to treat me , but if I could get a proper evaluation I would be eligible for workers comp, and that would allow me the time to rest and recover as well as the money to live on.(I'm probably dreaming)

do you have a good farmers market available where you are? or can you grow some things in your own back yard?  there are many winter hardy greens that are great for chelation, parsley and cilantro being the main ones, super easy to grow.  also if you have access to government aid, its worth it.  my food stamp dollars go right back to other farmers who are doing the same work i am, so i think of it as me generating a 200$ a month govt subsidy for quality meats and produce

I am going to start an herbal detox using Cilantro daily. Its suppose to be the best way to rid the body of aluminum.

http://customers.hbci.com/~wenonah/new/9steps.htm

I am considering this protocol, as it seems the safest and most economical, and it wont interfere with the paleo diet.

Open to other suggestions.

seems like a pretty moderate and non toxic approach.......do you plan to use sauna in addition to this?

i really appreciate dr l wilsons advice.  some of his social commentary is pretty silly but you have good enough judgement to sort that out yourself.  he does make some very good points and definitely instills that patience, consistency and time are a very important part of the process.

I am sitting in an infrared sauna right now.
Have been chewing on cilantro for the last three days. I tried my first piece of garlic this morning and instantly threw it up, it was so overpowering. I had an other piece later and kept it down alright.

I am scanning through DR.Wilsons pages and think I may have stumbled across something that relates to my condition, of aluminum and manganese toxicity. I guess its more common than I thought?

http://drlwilson.com/articles/IRON,%20MANG,ALUM.htm

I am very curious about what approach I should stay with. It may take a long time to get re-balanced, am especially concerned with my manganese level being so high.

What does anyone think about using coffee enemas along with cilantro, mineral supplements and sauna use to facilitate elimination?

if you are having issues with your mineral balance in your body i would not recommend coffee enemas.  i think that the mineral imbalance is either a sign of unbalanced diet but also stress and suppressed adrenal function.  from my experience, the caffeine that is absorbed during a coffee enema is flushing to a bowels, but also caused further adrenal exhaustion and also mineral imbalance and a feeling of weakness, it also caused a lack of appetite which just ended up making me a bit burnt out feeling and more hungry later....

I have always been wary of enemas, they seem quite unnatural, and especially with the amount of caffeine going straight into you it could be dangerous for your adrenals as well as bowels and hydration levels.

Enemas do seem unnatural, but so are high levels of aluminum, and if I am removing large amounts from my tissues and bones it may require some kind of intermittent purging.

Juicing seems like a good Idea I just don't have the money right now to throw bunches of organic greens into the juicer.

The first time I did an aluminum detox, it was 7 ago, before going paleo I took a bunch of cilantro, pectin, juices while on a mostly vegtable diet. The detox was so intense that I went mad. During the detox I was being seen at the local health department, and had an elevated aluminum blood level of 11 1-7 being the safe range. I couldn't keep up the detox because the symptoms were so bad I was considering checking myself into a mental ward.

I struggled with the symptoms for a couple more years and tried to cope the best I could.    Then about 4 years ago I began to go pre diabetic and was having bad autoimmune flare ups, so I decided to look into other detox protocol. I ended up fasting a lot, and for a couple of months used a protocol of mostly vegetarian diet, juicing apples and carrots and taking daily coffee enemas. It offered some relief and I do think there was some detoxification, but because of lack of nutrition I began to wither away.

In retrospect I think those cleanses did help me enter into the paleo diet, but my poor elimination and mineral balances still have not been fully corrected. I am just wondering if intermittently doing some intense cleansing followed by rebuilding with a more balance nutrition program would offer the best results, with the least amount of discomfort.
