Yup. It is also true that severe weather events are becoming more common though, so while temperature rise on a global average has paused, the climate is certainly still changing regionally. Whether this is due to anthropogenic effects (i.e. greenhouse gas emissions) is another issue entirely.

James Lovelock (creator of Gaia hypothesis) explains it this way:

If you put a glass of water & ice into a warm room then the temperature of the water will stay quite stable until the ice has melted.

He thinks it is the same with the earth - the extra energy being captured by high CO2 levels is being used to melt ice and so has little initial impact on average temperatures. You can see reports of shrinking glaciers and for the first time in recorded history the arctic ocean is free of ice in summer.

A better indicator of climate change during this early phase is to measure global ice loss.

My opinion on the matter is that WARMING aka Temperature Rise as a name for the public scare is stupid.

The real issue is POLLUTION.  So use the word POLLUTION.

Certainly the temperature fluctuated wildly before humans came along.  I don't think global warming is the main question.  I'm tired of breathing particulates from coal/gasoline/diesel smoke, and I think an oil-based economy is the main cause of Islamic terrorism. Those are far more important to me.
