Unrefined Red Palm Oil
« on: November 21, 2012, 10:57:23 pm »
Hi guys,                                                                                                                Does unrefined red palm oil deserve a place in the raw paleo diet?

I think it can be a useful supplement for people who aren't getting enough saturated fat, and/or aren't getting enough vitamin A.  it depends on the person.

As to whether it's rawpaleo or not, that's not as important to me as what effect it has on individual peoples' health at a given moment.  I personally don't use it because it gives me stomach cramps and gas, and also because I don't notice health improvements from it, or from other vitamin A-rich sources.

I'd say it's more valuable because of the vitamin E, rather than vitamin A?

there was a recent study showing an increase in all-cause mortality with vitamin E supplementation.  OTOH, cod liver oil, which is VERY high in vitamin A, has been used healthfully for many centuries.

No, it doesn't deserve it at all. No, because any kind of processing always damages the nutrients in some way, no matter how "gentle" the processing may be. Heat isn't the only non-rawpalaeo aspect. And also  it shouldn't be used, morally speaking, because by buying palm oil you are encouraging the destruction of the rainforests in favour of palm plantations in places like Borneo.
