silver brite salmon imported from Canada
« on: January 23, 2013, 01:35:16 pm »
I could get whole silver brite salmons imported from Canada at a very inexpensive price at a local grocer ($2.99 a pound). The taste is OK to me. Does anyone know of any health concern regarding eating this species of salmon? I understand that it is considered Pacific salmon.

As long as they are not farm-raised, they should be fine.

Some people get nausea from raw wild salmon.  Not everyone does, but a few people do If that happens, then don't eat it.  It won't cause you harm, but it can make you nauseous if you eat it.

Well, if it tastes good to you, enjoy it. I love wild salmon, but it makes me nauseous.  I can enjoy other fatty fish, though.

Do you know why it makes you nauseous? What is in wild salmon that could make people feel nauseous?

There's a specific naturally-occurring chemical, I don't remember the name of it. it's not present in large amounts in farmed salmon, only wild.

Interesting, CK. Thanks. Fortunately I do not seem to be allergic to any food, except for alcohol.

All those reports concern Pacific salmon. No one's had an issue with Atlantic salmon.

But my impression is that Atlantic salmon is not as good as Pacific salmon? more parasite problems?

I have heard negative things about Atlantic salmon, but that might be due to the fact that there are two sides of the Atlantic. What I hear pertains to the North American side of the Atlantic, where salmon is intensively farmed, fed corn, and treated with dye to make it look orange. (Corn-fed salmon is white-fleshed.)

Wrong impression. Atlantic salmon is only bad if farmed. I'm a bit sceptical of the notion that Pacific salmon is bad. I suspect that some chemicals/preservatives are sometimes added, which might cause some RVAFers some problems, not that the fish themselves are a problem.

Often, Pacific salmon fishing practices are not sustainable. Also, damming of rivers has caused problems with some salmon populations. Chum salmon is okay in most cases, less expensive, but good meat.
