Insanity on Raw Paleo?
« on: January 28, 2013, 05:36:31 pm »
Hey y'all, I'll be trying out a (mostly) raw paleo diet in a few weeks, and I think I'll be doing the second month of Insanity in the mornings while I'm at it. Do you think it would work? My diet right now is pretty paleo, so I won't be experiencing a lot of carb withdrawal symptoms (I hope).
Doing Insanity also means that I'd need a lot more carbs than usually recommended, but it's only for a month so it should be OK. Do you think I should get them just from fruit or from other sources as well?
I'm thinking of getting 150-300g of carbs per day except on Saturdays, because I won't work out on Sundays. Will this prevent my body from learning to burn fat?
Also, when should I eat my carbs? I'll do insanity in the mornings on an empty stomach (done it before and it worked fine), so my glycogen stores will be pretty depleted during the day, unless I eat carbs, which I'm thinking of doing in the afternoon. Post-workout I'll be eating raw eggs with veggies.

As you can see, I have a lot of questions ^^ please help me with anything you can. This diet is an experiment and if it goes wrong, I won't be able to continue it after 30 days (I'm 17 and live with my mother, and it was really hard to convince her to let me try this).

Thanks :)

Go ahead and eat carbs. I recommend getting them from fruits, vegetables, honey, and some nuts (all raw of course). I think eating them right after your workout should be fine.

I read somewhere that you should eat carbs before the workout and not afterward, and that afterwards you should eat protein. That's why I'd be eating the carbs as an afternoon snack (fruit smoothie or something). That way my body would have to rely on fat for most of the day and would still be able to do the workout in the mornings. Also, not eating sugar in the mornings is good because it would otherwise cause to high an insulin spike.
Do you agree?

I don't like getting so ... what's the word... detailed with the diet.

Some people recommend carbs pre workout, some post workout. Some say the carbs boost insulin and increase protein uptake if you eat protein too, ie a raw egg and fruit smoothie. Some say the carbs stop testosterone and growth hormone production.

Personally I don't think it's bad to eat carbs post workout.

Go ahead. Though it does make sense and my questions were legitimate, I've decided to do my own training program  and it doesn't involve High Intensity Interval Training (à la Insanity), so I couldn't care less about this thread.

This thread makes sense if you realize that "Insanity" is a type of training program like P90X

Understandably, we were a little worried, earlier,  re mention of insanity, without a specific reference.

Nice video.
Nice concept.

Do we really desire 8% body fat?

How much body fat as a % is a good thing?

I'm pretty sure mine is around 4 or 5%. Even  if I started doing a lot more weightlifting, and gained weight from that, it would still just be muscle weight, so my body fat % would probably stay the same.

For women anything below 18% is considered unsafe.

You mean your body fat mass would probably stay the same. If you were gaining muscle and not fat then body fat % is obviously dropping.

I reckon that for people living outside of the tropics body fat % would likely have varied with the seasons. People would have built up fat reserves over the summer and autumn by consumption of carbohydrates from fruit. This would have helped them survive the winter. In the spring these people would have been at their leanest. I wouldn't know what figures to give you though, regarding exact body fat %.

I think I'd be storing some more fat, though, just from the increased calories I'd have to eat to sustain the exta muscle mass. World champion powerlifters have a lot of both muscle AND fat.
