I found "whitebait" on Wikipedia, and it seems like what I get in Asian markets. Sometimes I find them fresh, and always frozen (which I don't buy). There are little ones that are about 1 - 1/2 inches long - white with black eyes. Also I find smelt, a larger fish about 3 inches long (bar snack size!).

I haven't come across a source as yet, but sounds interesting...

oh, yes, i forgot that i did look in the asian markets here. they have them boiled and frozen  >:

haven't found them fresh or frozen, not even online.  online there are uk and new zealand companies.

i think they are baby herring?  they're great, and i love the idea that i'm eating the whole thing.
